Valletta sits on Malta's eastern coast just 8 kilometres (5 miles) northeast of Malta International Airport (MLA) at Luqa. The entire historic peninsula inside the 16th-century bastions is a pedestrian-priority zone guarded by automatic Controlled Vehicular Access (CVA) license-plate cameras. Consequently, the smartest way to arrive and move around is via rideshare app, direct airport bus, or harbour ferry. Use this transport guide together with our Valletta hotel neighbourhood guide and our Valletta travel guide.

From Malta International Airport (MLA) to Valletta in 20 minutes

All international flights land at Malta International Airport (MLA) in Luqa, just eight kilometres southwest of Valletta's City Gate. You have two quick, reliable ways into town:

  • Fixed-Fare Airport Taxi or Rideshare App (~€14 to €18, 15 to 25 minutes). If you are carrying suitcases or staying down one of Valletta's lower perimeter streets (such as St Ursula Street, East Street, or Marsamxett), a car can drive inside the ring road to drop you right at your hotel door. Either use the Bolt, Uber, or local Maltese eCabs mobile app (pickup is at the designated rideshare bays outside the terminal exit, typically €14.00 to €17.00 as of November 2026). Alternatively, buy a prepaid voucher at the official white-taxi kiosk inside the Arrivals Baggages Hall (fixed rate of €17.00 to Valletta for up to 4 passengers).
  • Tallinja Bus Route X4 or Express TD4 (€2.00 to €3.00, 25 minutes). Walk straight out of the Arrivals Hall to the airport bus bays. Direct bus Route X4 (and the non-stop TD4 express) runs every 20 to 30 minutes from 05:30 to 23:00 and drops you at the Valletta Bus Terminus beside the Triton Fountain. From the bays, it is a flat two-minute walk across Renzo Piano's bridge into City Gate. Pay on board by tapping any contactless Visa/Mastercard (€2.00 single from mid-October to mid-June; €2.50 in summer; €3.00 on TD routes, valid for 2 hours including transfers).

Using the Valletta Bus Terminus (Triton Fountain) and Tallinja passes

Malta's public bus network was built like a wheel with Valletta as the central hub. Outside City Gate around the circular plaza of the restored 1959 Triton Fountain sit Bays A, B, and C, from which direct green-and-white Tallinja buses depart to every corner of the island. Routes 51, 52, and 53 run to Mdina and Rabat (30 minutes), while Routes 81 and 85 serve Marsaxlokk (35 minutes). You can also board Route 74 to the Blue Grotto (35 minutes) or Routes 41 and 42 to the Ċirkewwa Gozo vehicle ferry terminal (65 minutes).

If you plan to take four or more bus trips, skip individual cash tickets and pick up a 12 Single Day Journeys Card (€21.00 as of November 2026), which is shareable among multiple travellers. Alternatively, buy the 7-Day Explore Flex Card (€25.00 adult) from the Tallinja ticket booths and vending machines at the Airport or Valletta Terminus.

Harbour Ferries: Sliema, the Three Cities, and the 45-Minute Gozo Fast Ferry

Valletta's two harbours act as congestion-free water highways. On the northern Marsamxett Harbour side at Marsamxett Pier, the Sliema Ferry departs every 15 to 30 minutes for Sliema's The Strand in 8 minutes (€2.00 single / €3.80 return as of November 2026). On the southern Grand Harbour side (at Lascaris Wharf directly at the foot of the Upper Barrakka Lift), two essential boats depart:

  1. The Three Cities Ferry & Wooden Dgħajsa Boats. The modern ferry crosses to Cospicua (Bormla) and Vittoriosa (Birgu) every 30 minutes (€2.00 single / €3.80 return, which includes free use of the Upper Barrakka Lift!). Right beside it, traditional wooden dgħajsa water taxis depart continuously on demand for €3.00 cash per person.
  2. Gozo Highspeed Fast Catamaran. Foot passengers do not need to ride a bus for an hour to the northern tip of Malta to catch the car ferry. Instead, you can board the high-speed catamaran right at Valletta's Lascaris Wharf and reach Mġarr Harbour on Gozo in 45 minutes (€7.50 single / €12.00 return as of November 2026).

Should you rent a car? CVA tolls and MCP Floriana parking explained

If you are staying inside Valletta and visiting the Three Cities, Mdina, the Hypogeum, and Gozo, you do not need a rental car. Parking inside the bastions is severely restricted (many spaces are painted green or blue for Valletta residents only). Entering the peninsula by car also triggers automatic CVA (Controlled Vehicular Access) cameras that bill your rental company €0.80 per hour up to €6.50 per day. If you do rent a car to explore rural Malta, park in the 1,200-space MCP Car Park in Floriana just 400 metres outside City Gate (€2.00 to €8.00 per day depending on duration as of November 2026). From the garage, you walk five minutes into Valletta.
