Berlin Nightlife Guide

Which districts to go out in, how entry works, how late it runs and how to get home.

Berlin's reputation for nightlife is earned, and it works differently from most capitals. There is no single party district, no pressure to dress up and no fixed hour at which things stop. The questions below cover what first-time visitors tend to ask.

Which districts should I go out in?

For clubs, the areas around the river in Friedrichshain and along the Spree toward Treptow are the long-standing centres, with well-known names such as Berghain, Tresor, Watergate and Sisyphos. For bars, Kreuzberg and Neukölln offer the widest choice, from simple corner pubs to cocktail rooms. Check current line-ups and entry policy on each venue's own site, because nights and rules change.

How does club entry work?

At most big clubs you queue, and staff decide who comes in. Nobody can promise entry. Go in a small group, arrive sober and relaxed, and be polite. Bring photo ID and some cash, since card payment is not guaranteed. Many clubs ask you to cover your phone camera, and photography inside is usually not allowed, so plan to remember the night rather than film it.

How late do things run?

Late. Bars often start filling late in the evening, and clubs tend to begin after midnight and carry on through the morning. Some venues run for most of a weekend. Berlin also has the Späti, a small late shop where you can buy a drink and drink it on the street or by the canal, a cheap way to begin an evening. Some small old-style pubs still allow smoking inside.

What should I wear?

There is no dress code to worry about. Dark, comfortable clothes and sturdy shoes are the unofficial uniform, and effort can count against you. Leave anything formal at the hotel.

How do I get home?

On weekend nights the U-Bahn and many S-Bahn lines run through the night, with night buses and some trams filling the gaps on other nights. Our getting around guide explains the network and zones. Check the official BVG timetable for the night you travel. If you stay in the centre, where to stay will help you choose a base within easy reach.
