Museum Island Guide
Five museums on a Spree island, and how to choose between them.
Museum Island is a group of five museums on the northern tip of an island in the Spree, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1999. They are the Altes Museum, Neues Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Bode-Museum and Pergamonmuseum. The island was built across the nineteenth century as a temple of art and science for the public, and the buildings are as much a reason to come as the collections.
Which museums to pick
Trying to see everything in a day leaves most people numb. Choose two. The Neues Museum holds the Egyptian collection and the bust of Nefertiti, and it is the one we would not drop. The Alte Nationalgalerie is the one for painting lovers, with German Romantics and French Impressionists. The Bode-Museum is the quietest, with sculpture and Byzantine art under a dome at the island's tip. The Altes Museum, a Schinkel building facing the Lustgarten, covers classical antiquity.
The Pergamonmuseum
Many visitors come for the Pergamon Altar, but the museum is closed for renovation and is scheduled to reopen on 4 June 2027. In 2026, plan the island without it. If an older guidebook tells you to start there, ignore it.
Booking and getting in
The central entrance is the James-Simon-Galerie, a modern building by David Chipperfield, which is a short walk across the colonnaded courtyard from the Neues Museum. Check the official site for current ticket types, timed slots and which buildings are open on the day you come, since schedules change. Several tickets bundle the island museums, and the WelcomeCard has a version that includes them, which suits a day of serious museum-going. If you are only doing one, a single ticket is simpler.
Pair it with
On the same island, the Humboldt Forum is in the rebuilt palace, and Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten sit on the south side. The island is the end of Unter den Linden, so it follows a morning at the Brandenburg Gate naturally. Arrive for the first entry of the day, and have lunch off the island, in the streets around Hackescher Markt.
