Humboldt Forum Guide
The rebuilt palace on Museum Island, with world cultures collections inside.
The Humboldt Forum stands on the site of the Berlin Palace, the Hohenzollern residence that was damaged in the Second World War and demolished by the East German government in 1950. Its successor, the Palace of the Republic, was in turn pulled down in 2008. The new building has three reconstructed baroque facades and one plainly modern side, facing the Spree, and the mix is the first thing to look at.
What you see
Inside are the non-European collections of the Ethnological Museum and the Museum of Asian Art, which were moved here from Dahlem, plus exhibitions about Berlin and its history. The collections raise open questions about colonial-era acquisition, and the labelling is frank about that, so expect argument rather than reverence. The Schlüterhof, the arcaded inner courtyard, is the most impressive architectural space and can be entered without a museum ticket; check the official site for the current arrangement. The rooftop terrace gives a close view of the Cathedral dome and the Spree.
How long to allow
A courtyard and terrace stop takes under an hour. A real visit to the collections needs half a day, and the building is large enough that most people tire before they finish. Pick one or two floors rather than walking all of it. Exhibitions and entry rules change often, so look at the official programme before you book.
Pair it with
The Forum sits at the southern end of Museum Island, and the Berlin Cathedral and the Lustgarten are a minute away across the bridge. Walk west along Unter den Linden afterwards, or cross to the DDR Museum on the opposite bank for a different kind of history. In front of the palace you will find the Neptune Fountain, moved here after the war, and a long open square that usually hosts events.
Who it suits
It suits people curious about museum ethics and about how Berlin rebuilds its past, and anyone who wants a dry, indoor option on a wet day. We would skip the full collections visit if your time is short and you have already planned Museum Island, because the two compete for the same energy. In that case, take the courtyard and the terrace, then move on.
