Topography of Terror Guide

A free documentation centre on the site of the Gestapo and SS headquarters.

The Topography of Terror stands on the site of the Gestapo headquarters, the SS leadership and the Reich Security Main Office, the institutions that organised persecution and mass murder. The buildings were bombed and later demolished, and the ground lay empty for decades before the documentation centre opened in 2010. Entry is free. It is a document-based exhibition, not a memorial in the emotional sense, and it expects you to read.

Exhibition and outdoor grounds

The permanent exhibition inside the long, low glass-and-steel building traces how the Nazi state worked, from the first months in 1933 to the end of the war, with photographs, documents and short texts. Outside, the excavated cellar walls of the Gestapo prison are visible in a trench, and a long stretch of the Berlin Wall runs along Niederkirchnerstraße, which is one of the longest surviving sections apart from the East Side Gallery. Some of the material is distressing, and younger children are not the intended audience.

Planning your visit

Allow two to three hours for the exhibition and a short walk outside. The text is dense, so we would use the audio guide, which is available in many languages, and check the official site for current options. Do not try to combine it with another heavy site on the same afternoon.

Visitor rules

Behave as you would at any memorial. Do not take jokey photographs, speak quietly and keep to the paths in the outdoor area.

Nearby sites

The Checkpoint Charlie area is a short walk away, though we would visit this site first and the tourist spot second. For the wider story, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Jewish Museum are both close, and the Berlin Wall Memorial shows a different part of the twentieth century. If you only choose one documentation site for the Nazi period, we would choose this one.
