Best Things to Do in Berlin
Eleven things to do in Berlin, grouped by area, with one stop to skip.
Berlin's sights fall into a few clear areas, so this list runs roughly from the historic centre outwards. You will not do all eleven in a short trip, and nobody should try.
- Brandenburg Gate. The neoclassical gate at the end of Unter den Linden, standing where the Wall once ran. See it early, then again lit up after dark. Our gate guide has the context.
- Reichstag dome. A glass dome with a spiralling ramp over the German parliament chamber. It is free, but you must register ahead, as the dome guide explains.
- Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. A field of concrete stelae of different heights, best walked slowly and in silence. Read our notes on visiting respectfully.
- Museum Island. Five museums on a small island in the Spree. Choose one or two, because the Pergamonmuseum is closed until its scheduled reopening in June 2027. Start with our Museum Island guide.
- Humboldt Forum. A rebuilt palace façade hiding a large cultural centre, with a roof terrace over the centre.
- TV Tower. The tallest structure in the city, visible from most neighbourhoods and a handy compass. See the TV Tower guide.
- Berlin Wall Memorial. On Bernauer Strasse, a stretch of the former border strip with a documentation centre. Free, and the clearest place to understand how the Wall worked.
- East Side Gallery. About a kilometre of surviving Wall covered in murals beside the Spree, ending near the Oberbaum Bridge.
- Topography of Terror. A documentation centre on the site of the Gestapo and SS headquarters, free to enter. Serious and essential for history readers.
- Tiergarten and Tempelhofer Feld. The first is a central park with lakes and wooded paths, the second a former airport used as a giant public field. Read about Tiergarten and Tempelhofer Feld.
- Charlottenburg Palace. The grand Prussian royal residence in the west, with formal gardens. Pair it with City West for a calmer day.
What we would skip: lingering at Checkpoint Charlie. The booth is a reconstruction, with costumed guards and souvenir stands around it. Take a minute for the photo panels on the street, then spend your time at the Wall Memorial instead. Our Checkpoint Charlie guide says what deserves a stop there.
