3-Day Bruges Itinerary: Medieval Canals, Flemish Masters, Beer & Damme
Follow our timed 3-day Bruges itinerary covering the Belfort, Rozenhoedkaai canal boats, Jan van Eyck and Memling art, De Halve Maan Brewery, and Damme.
While rushed day-trippers try to sprint through Bruges in four hours between coach stops, spending three full days lets you experience the city the way it was meant to be seen. Timing outdoor canal bridges and squares before 10:00 and after 17:30 lets you dedicate the busy midday hours to Bruges's 15th-century Flemish Primitive paintings. On Day 3, venturing out along the windmill ramparts to the medieval port of Damme keeps you ahead of the crowds at every turn.

Day 1: Markt Square, the Belfort Climb, Canal Boats, and De Halve Maan Brewery
08:30 to 10:15: Rozenhoedkaai at Dawn and the First Canal Boat. Start your morning with a warm croissant and coffee at a bakery near Burg Square, then walk to Rozenhoedkaai and Huidenvettersplein at 08:45 when the Dijver water is mirror-still. Join the front of the queue at the Rozenhoedkaai or Steenhouwersdijk jetty at 09:50. Boarding the very first 10:00 open-top canal boat cruise (€15.00 adult as of November 2026, 30 minutes) gets you onto the water before tour buses reach the centre.
10:45 to 12:45: Burg Square, the Gothic Town Hall, and the Belfort Climb. Walk two minutes into Burg Square to tour the 1376 Stadhuis (Town Hall) and the adjacent Brugse Vrije (featuring Lancelot Blondeel's monumental 1528 carved oak, marble, and alabaster Renaissance chimneypiece of Emperor Charles V). At 11:30, use your pre-booked timed slot to climb the 366 steps of the Belfort (€15.00 or included in the €33.00 Musea Brugge Card), timing your arrival at the upper bell chamber for the noon carillon chimes.

13:00 to 16:30: Flemish Stoverij Lunch, Holy Blood Veneration, and De Halve Maan Brewery. Skip the overpriced tourist traps directly on Markt Square and walk five minutes to a side-street brasserie for a lunch of beef stoverij braised in dark beer. At 14:00, step into the upper Gothic chapel of the Basilica of the Holy Blood (free admission; Treasury €5.00) when afternoon veneration of the crystal vial takes place. At 15:00, walk down to Walplein for a 45-minute guided tour of the family-run De Halve Maan Brewery (€16.00 as of November 2026), finishing with a glass of unfiltered Brugse Zot and a view from the brewery roof.
19:00 to 22:00: Evening Canal Walk and Historic Beer Taverns. After dinner, follow the floodlit brick bridges from Peerdenbrug along Groenerei to Jan van Eyckplein. Finish the night inside the timbered rooms of ’t Brugs Beertje (Kemelstraat 5) or the medieval cellar of Le Trappiste (Kuipersstraat 33).
Day 2: The Beguinage at Dawn, Michelangelo, Memling, and Jan van Eyck
08:30 to 10:30: Begijnhof Ten Wijngaerde, Minnewater, and Bonifacius Bridge. Enter the whitewashed gate of the 1245 Princely Beguinage (Begijnhof) at 08:30 while the orchard lawn is completely silent. Stroll south around Minnewater (Lake of Love) past the 1519 Poertoren gunpowder tower and the 16th-century Sashuis lock-keeper's house, then walk north along Katelijnestraat to cross Bonifacius Bridge behind the Gruuthuse Palace before 10:15.
10:30 to 13:00: Church of Our Lady and Hans Memling at St John's Hospital. Step inside the Church of Our Lady (€8.00 museum zone or Musea Brugge Card) to stand before Michelangelo's marble Madonna and Child and the excavated painted medieval burial vaults beneath the choir. Cross Mariastraat directly into the 12th-century Sint-Janshospitaal (€15.00 or Musea Card) to view Hans Memling's St John Altarpiece (1479), the Shrine of St Ursula, and the preserved 17th-century monastic pharmacy.

14:30 to 17:30: Groeningemuseum, Gruuthusemuseum, and Artisan Chocolate Crawl. After a light waffle or soup lunch, spend ninety minutes in the Groeningemuseum (€15.00 or Musea Card) studying Jan van Eyck, Gerard David, and Petrus Christus. Next door, explore the 500-piece decorative arts collection inside the 15th-century Gruuthusemuseum (including its original wooden oratory balcony looking straight into the choir of the Church of Our Lady). Dedicate the final hour before 18:00 to sampling bean-to-bar pralines at The Chocolate Line, Dumon, and Dominique Persoone's workshops.
Day 3: Sint-Anna Quarter, Kruisvest Windmills, and Cycling or Boating to Damme
09:30 to 12:30: Jeruzalemkerk, Lace Centre, and Kruisvest Windmills. Walk northeast into the peaceful Sint-Anna Quarter to visit the 1429 Adornes Domain & Jeruzalemkerk (€10.00) and watch master bobbin-lace makers next door at the Kantcentrum (Lace Centre). Continue to the grassy ramparts of Kruisvest to climb inside the working 1770 Sint-Janshuismolen grain windmill (€8.00 or Musea Card).
13:30 to 17:30: Excursion along the Damse Vaart to Damme. From Dampoort at the northern tip of the Bruges ring, either board the nostalgic white paddle steamer Lamme Goedzak (April to September, ~€16.00 return) or rent a bicycle (~€14.00 for half a day). Either route takes you six flat kilometres along the poplar-lined Napoleon canal to the medieval port town of Damme for afternoon pancakes next to its 15th-century Town Hall and brick church tower.
If rain arrives on the morning of Day 2 or Day 3, simply swap your outdoor windmill and canal walk with your indoor museum hours. The Groeningemuseum, Sint-Janshospitaal, Gruuthusemuseum, and Church of Our Lady sit within three hundred metres of one another, letting you spend four hours indoors with barely two minutes in the rain.
For dinner reservations on Friday and Saturday nights, book your table two to three days ahead. Popular Flemish bistros like De Vlaamsche Pot, Bistro Den Amand, and Cambrinus fill their evening seatings early, especially between 19:00 and 20:30.
Before catching your train onward to Ghent, Brussels, or Amsterdam on Day 3, leave thirty minutes to stroll through the 19th-century Koning Albert I Park and Minnewater on the walk back to Brugge Station.
