How to Get to Bruges: Direct Trains from Brussels Airport, Ghent, Eurostar & Buses
Reach Bruges effortlessly using direct Belgian SNCB/NMBS InterCity trains from Brussels, Brussels Airport, and Ghent, with 2026 fares, weekend passes, and station walks.
Bruges sits in northwest Belgium just fifteen kilometres inland from the North Sea coast. It connects directly to the European high-speed rail network via Brugge Railway Station on the southern edge of the medieval moat ring. Up to three direct InterCity (IC) trains per hour link Bruges with Ghent and Brussels without reservations or seat quotas. Arriving by rail is therefore faster, cheaper, and far more convenient than driving into the pedestrianised historic core. Pair this arrival guide with our Bruges neighbourhood hotel guide and our Bruges travel guide.

How Belgian SNCB/NMBS domestic trains work (no seat reservations)
Unlike French TGV or Italian Frecciarossa trains where fares triple on the day of travel, domestic Belgian trains operated by SNCB (French) / NMBS (Dutch) work like a national metro system. A standard ticket between two Belgian cities has a fixed distance-based price. You pay the exact same fare whether you buy it ahead on belgiantrain.be or five minutes before departure at a station kiosk. Better still, your ticket is valid on any train on that route throughout the calendar day.
Even better, if you are travelling between Friday at 19:00 and Sunday night, always select the Weekend Ticket on the kiosk or app, which cuts return fares by roughly 50 percent (making a round trip from Brussels to Bruges roughly €18.40 instead of €34.20 as of November 2026). Travellers aged 65 and over qualify for the flat-rate Senior Ticket (~€8.50 return nationwide after 09:00), while travellers under 26 can use the Youth Ticket (~€7.70 one-way anywhere in Belgium). Note a crucial boarding tip at Brussels-Midi: trains headed through Bruges toward the coast display their final destination on the platform boards, look for IC trains to Oostende (Ostend), Knokke, or Blankenberge. If boarding the Knokke/Blankenberge train, it splits in two *after* stopping at Bruges, so every carriage on that train stops at Brugge Station.

Direct from Brussels Airport (BRU) and Charleroi Airport (CRL)
- From Brussels Airport Zaventem (BRU). Take the lift down to the underground railway station at Level -1 directly beneath the arrivals hall. One direct IC train per hour runs straight through Brussels and Ghent to Brugge in 1 hour and 28 minutes. Two additional trains per hour reach Brugge in 1 hour and 25 minutes via a simple cross-platform transfer at Brussels-North or Brussels-Midi (~€24.50 one-way as of November 2026, including the Diabolo rail supplement, scan your ticket barcode at the airport exit/entry gates).
- From Brussels South Charleroi Airport (CRL). Budget flights on Ryanair often land at Charleroi, 60 kilometres south of Brussels. Instead of taking a bus to Brussels and transferring to a train, book the direct Flibco shuttle coach (flibco.com), which departs directly outside the Charleroi terminal every 90 to 120 minutes. Coaches drive straight to Ghent and the rear of Brugge Railway Station (Kiss & Ride zone on Spoorwegstraat) in 2 hours and 10 minutes (~€19.90 to €24.90 one-way when booked online as of November 2026).
Walking or taking the bus from Brugge Station into the historic centre
Brugge Railway Station sits right outside the southwestern curve of the medieval canal ring, 1.5 kilometres (an easy 18-minute level walk) from Markt Square. If you are carrying a backpack or light bag, exit the front (East / Centrum) side of the station, cross the pedestrian bridge over the ring road. From there, follow the scenic tree-lined path through Minnewater Park (Lake of Love) and the Begijnhof straight into town.
If you have heavy wheeled suitcases or arrive in the rain, turn left outside the front station exit to the covered De Lijn city bus platforms. Bus Line 1 and Bus Line 2 depart every 5 to 10 minutes during the day, stopping at ’t Zand Square (5 minutes), Dijver/Gruuthuse (7 minutes), and Markt/Stadsschouwburg (9 minutes). Simply tap your contactless Visa, Mastercard, or Apple Pay on the white terminal inside the bus door for a flat €2.50 60-minute fare (as of November 2026).

Arriving by car or from Zeebrugge Cruise Port
Driving inside the medieval streets of Bruges is strongly discouraged: the entire inner city is a 30 km/h zone with one-way loops, automatic license-plate cameras, and blue-zone resident limits. If arriving by car along the E40 motorway, drive straight into the 1,500-space garage at Centrum-Station right beside the railway station (€6.10 per 24 hours as of November 2026). Your parking ticket includes a free De Lijn bus transfer into the centre for the driver and passengers. Alternatively, use the underground Centrum-Zand garage beneath ’t Zand Square (€15.80 per 24 hours).
If arriving on a cruise ship at Port of Zeebrugge (17 kilometres north on the North Sea coast), skip the €60+ cruise-line excursions. Take the free port shuttle to the port gate, walk 10 minutes to the Zeebrugge Kerk tram stop to ride the Kusttram (Coastal Tram) three stops west to Blankenberge Station (10 minutes, €2.50 contactless). From Blankenberge, hop on the hourly SNCB train into Brugge Station (13 minutes, ~€4.20), or take a pre-booked Cruise Express shuttle coach (~€25 return) straight to Bargeplein.
Traveller tips
- Stop in Ghent on the same route with two separate tickets. Standard Belgian domestic tickets do not automatically include a multi-hour mid-journey stopover unless you buy a dedicated Via ticket. The simplest trick for visiting Ghent on your way between Brussels and Bruges is to buy two separate tickets: Brussels to Gent-Sint-Pieters (~€11.10) and Gent-Sint-Pieters to Brugge (~€8.00). This costs less than €2.00 more than a single through ticket and gives you total flexibility.
- Use the automatic station lockers at Brugge Station. Located in the main ground-floor corridor near the platforms, the self-service electronic lockers accept contactless bank cards and print a barcode receipt to reopen your door. As of November 2026, 24-hour rentals cost €5.50 for small/medium, €7.50 for large, and €9.50 for jumbo lockers.
If you are travelling with a Eurail or Interrail Global Pass, all domestic SNCB/NMBS InterCity trains between Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp, Ostend, and Bruges are 100% included without any seat reservation supplement. Simply add the train to your Rail Planner app before boarding and show the QR barcode to the conductor.
For travellers arriving late at night at Brugge Railway Station after 23:00 when De Lijn city buses finish their regular loops, licensed metered taxis wait at the front station rank outside the main exit. A night taxi ride into central Bruges hotels around Markt or Dijver typically costs €12 to €16 as of November 2026.
Cyclists bringing their own folding bike on Belgian trains can ride free of charge at any hour. Full-size non-folding bicycles require a flat €4.00 Bike Supplement ticket on the SNCB app and are loaded into the marked multi-purpose carriage.
