Damme Canal Boat, Kruisvest Windmills & North Sea Day Trips from Bruges
Escape the midday crowds of Bruges by walking the four Kruisvest windmills, riding the Lamme Goedzak paddle steamer (or cycling 6 km) to medieval Damme, or visiting Ostend.
One of the joys of Bruges's compact geography is how quickly the medieval streets give way to polder meadows, poplar-lined canals, and the North Sea coast. Within a fifteen-minute walk of Burg Square, you can climb onto the grassy 13th-century earthen ramparts of Kruisvest to see four historic wooden windmills turning above the moat. From the northern canal lock of Dampoort, a flat six-kilometre canal path leads straight to Bruges's medieval outport of Damme.

Walking the Kruisvest Ramparts and the Four Wooden Windmills
When Bruges constructed its second outer defensive ring in 1297, up to twenty-five wooden post windmills sat atop the high earthen ramparts. Positioned to catch the coastal wind, they ground grain, bark, and oilseeds for the city inside. Today, four historic wooden windmills survive along a lush 1.2-kilometre stretch of the northeastern rampart park called Kruisvest, stretching northward from the twin towers of the 1401 Kruispoort (Cross Gate) toward Dampoort:
- Sint-Janshuismolen (built 1770). Standing on its original 1770 mound just north of Kruispoort, this is the only windmill in Bruges that still stands on its original spot and still grinds flour by wind power. From April to October (€8.00 adult or free with the Musea Brugge Card as of November 2026), visitors can climb the steep wooden ladder inside the rotating mill house. Inside, the miller demonstrates how the canvas sails and heavy millstones grind flour.
- Bonne-Chieremolen (1888), Koeleweimolen (1765), and Nieuwe Papegaai (1970). Walking north along the grassy path beneath the chestnut trees brings you past three additional preserved wooden post mills relocated from surrounding Flemish villages. Each mill rests on a brick base that allows the entire wooden house to be pivoted into the wind using a long tailpole.

Half-Day Trip to Damme: Paddle Steamer, Bicycle, or Canal Walk
Six kilometres northeast of Bruges along the poplar-shaded Damse Vaart (Napoleon Canal) sits the red-brick village of Damme. The canal itself was dug in 1810 by Spanish prisoners of war on the orders of Napoleon Bonaparte to move barges inland out of reach of the British Royal Navy. Founded in 1180 at a dam across the tidal Zwin inlet, Damme served for two centuries as the busy outer maritime port of Bruges. Deep-draft sea cogs transferred French wine and English wool here onto flat-bottomed canal barges, and Duke Philip the Good married Isabella of Portugal in Damme in 1430.
Today Damme has fewer than 1,000 residents, a literary reputation as an international Book Town (Boekendorp), and three delightful ways to arrive from Bruges:
- Ride the Nostalgic Paddle Steamer Lamme Goedzak. Between April and late September/October (4 to 5 departures daily at 10:00, 12:00, 14:00, 16:00, and 17:20 from the Noorweegse Kaai jetty just outside Dampoort at the northern tip of the Bruges ring), this white twin-wheel riverboat glides peacefully up the Damse Vaart to the centre of Damme in 35 minutes (~€16.00 adult return / €13.00 one-way as of November 2026, tickets sold right aboard or at bootdamme-brugge.be).
- Cycle the Flat 6 km Towpath (25 minutes). Rent a sturdy city bike or e-bike in Bruges (~€12 to €16 for half a day near ’t Zand, Markt, or Brugge Station). From Dampoort, follow the car-free asphalt cycle path directly beneath the leaning rows of Lombardy poplars along the canal bank.
- What to See and Eat in Damme. Admire the sculpted 1464 Gothic Damme Town Hall and the statue of 13th-century Flemish poet Jacob van Maerlant on the Markt, then visit the 1249 Sint-Janshospitaal. Five minutes down Kerkstraat rises the brick Church of Our Lady (Onze-Lieve-Vrouwekerk), whose flat-topped 45-metre tower (206 steps, ~€3.00 in summer) commands a panorama over the 17th-century Spanish fortifications and distant Bruges. Before returning, stop at one of Damme's canal-side tearooms (like De Siphon or Tante Marie) for crispy Flemish pancakes and abbey beer.

Bonus Excursions: Lissewege's 13th-Century Abbey Barn and Ostend Beach
If you have a third afternoon free, hop on the direct commuter train from Brugge Station 11 minutes north to Lissewege, repeatedly voted one of the prettiest polder villages in Flanders. A tiny flower-lined canal cuts through whitewashed brick cottages beneath the massive flat-topped brick tower of the 13th-century Church of Our Lady of the Visitation (free 264-step tower climb in summer), and a 15-minute walk outside the village brings you to the colossal 1275 Abbey Barn of Ter Doest, a cathedral-scaled 50-metre-long medieval Cistercian tithe barn supported by giant oak pillars, right next to the historic Hof Ter Doest steakhouse. Alternatively, take any of the three hourly IC trains 13 minutes west to Ostend (Oostende) to walk the neoclassical seaside promenade. Here you can visit the museum home of painter James Ensor (Vlaanderenstraat 29, €14.00 as of November 2026) and eat fresh shrimp croquettes overlooking the North Sea surf.
When the seasonal Lamme Goedzak paddle steamer is not running between November and March, you can still reach Damme without cycling. De Lijn Bus Line 42 links Brugge Station and ’t Zand with Damme in fifteen minutes (€2.50 contactless fare as of November 2026).
While walking the Kruisvest windmill ramparts in northeastern Bruges, pause at the quiet yacht marina of Coupure just south of Kruispoort. Here a white wooden drawbridge crosses the canal into the peaceful residential lanes of Sint-Anna.
In Damme, literature fans can also visit the Uilenspiegelmuseum inside the 15th-century Huyse De Grote Sterre (€5.00 as of November 2026). The museum celebrates Charles De Coster's 1867 Flemish folk novel of Till Eulenspiegel and his companion Lamme Goedzak.
