Nizhny Novgorod 3-Day Itinerary: Kremlin, Strelka, Cableway and Gorodets

A balanced three-day route across the Upper Town bluffs, the Lower Posad merchant street, the Oka and Volga confluence, and the craft town of Gorodets.

Three full days in Nizhny Novgorod give you time to walk the entire Upper Town cliff-top circuit, explore the nineteenth-century merchant street of the Lower Posad and the Fairgrounds across the Oka, ride the aerial cableway over the Volga, and take a half-day excursion to a historic Volga craft and gingerbread town.

Day 1: The Kremlin Wall Walk, Chkalov Stairs and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya

Begin Day 1 in the morning on Minin and Pozharsky Square and enter the 1500 to 1515 Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin through the 1895 Dmitrievskaya Gate Tower. Walk the complete 2-kilometre brick rampart circuit linking all 13 surviving towers down the steep hillside to the rebuilt 2012 Zachatskaya Tower and back up, pause inside the 1631 tent-roofed Archangel Michael Cathedral to see the tomb of Kuzma Minin, and take the lift inside the rebuilt Transfiguration Cathedral bell tower for panoramic confluence views. Exit by St. George's Tower onto the clifftop Upper Volga Embankment, touring the 1877 Rukavishnikov Mansion (no. 7) and the 1916 Sirotkin House (no. 3, home to the State Art Museum's Western European collection) before descending the 442 right-side steps of the figure-eight Chkalov Stairs (opened in 1949) to the boat Hero on the Lower Volga Embankment. Ride the Kremlin funicular back up the bluff and spend late afternoon strolling the 1,236-metre pedestrian promenade of Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street past the 1826 Noble Assembly (no. 18), the 1896 Drama Theatre (no. 13), and the 1913 Neo-Russian State Bank castle at no. 26 to Maxim Gorky Square.

Day 2: Rozhdestvenskaya Street, Strelka Spit and Fedorovsky Sunset

Start the morning on National Unity Square below Ivanovskaya Tower and follow Rozhdestvenskaya Street past its protected stone monuments, stopping at the 1870s Blinov Passage (no. 24), the richly carved 1696 to 1719 Stroganov Church at no. 34, and the early-thirteenth-century Annunciation Monastery with its 1649 five-domed cathedral. Walk across Kanavinsky Bridge to the Nizhny Novgorod Fair and Strelka Spit to visit the 1822 Old Fair Cathedral, the 1890 Main Fair Building, the 87-metre 1881 Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, and the open-work iron Pakgauzy pavilions (from the 1882 and 1896 exhibitions) beside the 2018 stadium. Return to the Upper Town before dusk to watch sunset from the terraced 800th Anniversary Park on Fedorovsky Embankment before dining on Volga fish soup (ukha) and Vetluga mushroom pelmeni.

Day 3: Pechersky Monastery, Volga Cable Car and Gorodets

In the morning, descend from Sennaya Square to the fourteenth-century Pechersky Ascension Monastery at 108 Privolzhskaya Sloboda (where monk Laurentius copied the Laurentian Chronicle in 1377) to see its 1632 cathedral, then ride the 3,660-metre aerial cable car across the 861-metre Volga water span to Bor and back. Dedicate the afternoon to an excursion 53 kilometres north to Gorodets (by Valdai hydrofoil or train via Zavolzhye) to explore its twelfth-century ramparts, carved wooden merchant houses, the City of Masters, and the 2008 Gorodets Gingerbread Museum at 2 Lenin Street.
