Where to Stay in Nizhny Novgorod: Upper Town, Rozhdestvenskaya and Fair
Choose between hilltop hotels steps from the Kremlin and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, boutique merchant buildings on Rozhdestvenskaya, or rail-friendly Kanavino.
Choosing where to stay in Nizhny Novgorod comes down to whether you prefer waking up on top of the 80-metre historic bluffs in Nizhegorodsky District (the Upper Town), staying among the nineteenth-century merchant mansions and waterfront bars of the Lower Posad, or basing yourself across the Oka River near the railway terminal, stadium, and Fairgrounds in Kanavinsky District.

Upper Town: Minin and Pozharsky Square and Bolshaya Pokrovskaya
For most visitors, the Upper Town around Minin and Pozharsky Square, pedestrianised Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, and the Upper Volga Embankment is the most practical and atmospheric base. Staying on top of the plateau puts you on level ground with Dmitrievskaya Tower of the Nizhny Novgorod Kremlin, the 1913 Neo-Russian State Bank, the 1896 Drama Theatre, and the art and history museums housed in the 1877 Rukavishnikov Mansion and 1916 Sirotkin House. You can step out in the evening for cliff-top sunset views over the Volga and Oka without having to climb back up the 442 right-side steps of the Chkalov Stairs at the end of the night.

Rozhdestvenskaya Street and Lower Volga Embankment (Lower Posad)
Directly below the Kremlin ramparts along the right bank of the Oka, boutique hotels and apartments occupying restored nineteenth-century stone merchant buildings on Rozhdestvenskaya Street suit travellers who prioritise evening dining, craft cafés, river boat departures on the Lower Volga Embankment, and immediate access to the 1719 Stroganov Church and the early-thirteenth-century Annunciation Monastery. Keep in mind that reaching the Upper Town from here requires riding the Kremlin funicular, climbing the stepped paths up to Fedorovsky Embankment, or taking a short bus or Tram 11 ride.
Nizhny Novgorod Fair and Strelka (Kanavinsky District)
Across Kanavinsky Bridge on the flat left bank of the Oka, modern business and mid-range hotels around the 1890 Main Fair Building, the 1822 Old Fair Cathedral, Sovnarkomovskaya Street, and Strelka Spit are well placed for travellers arriving or departing on early Lastochka high-speed trains at Moskovsky Railway Station, while offering postcard views back across the water toward the Kremlin hill and Fedorovsky Embankment.
Maxim Gorky Square for Direct Metro Access
Staying near Maxim Gorky Square at the southern end of the 1,236-metre pedestrian zone on Bolshaya Pokrovskaya gives direct step-free access to Gorkovskaya Metro Station on Line 1, just one stop across the Oka Metro Bridge from Moskovsky Railway Station, and easy access to Tram 2 on the City Ring and buses toward Sennaya Square and Lyadov Square.
