Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Ride

The balloon flight is the one experience most people plan a Cappadocia trip around, and on a clear morning it lives up to the photos. You rise in the half dark with a hundred or so other balloons, the burners roaring every few seconds, and watch the sun come up over the valleys around Göreme. Then comes the part the photos don't show: long quiet stretches when the pilot lets the balloon drift and all you hear is the wind and someone's camera.

How a morning goes

A minibus collects you from your hotel well before sunrise. At the launch field there is tea, coffee and a light breakfast while crews unroll the envelopes, blow cold air into them with big fans, then heat them until they stand up. Once the basket is upright you climb in over the side (there are footholds, but it is an awkward step), and the pilot gives a short safety briefing. The flight lasts about an hour on a standard ticket. Where you go depends on the wind: some mornings you float low along Love Valley or Rose Valley, close enough to see pigeon holes in the rock, other mornings you climb high over the plain towards Çavuşin. Landing is often straight onto the trailer, followed by a glass of something fizzy and a certificate.

Who decides if you fly

Not your operator. Every morning the civil aviation authority, SHGM, assesses the weather for each sector of the flight zone and shows the result as a flag. Red and yellow mean no take-off clearance for anyone. Green means conditions allow flights, but the final call still rests with the pilot and the company, so a green flag does not guarantee your basket leaves the ground. Anyone promising a flight on a red-flag morning is not someone you want to fly with.

Who it suits, and who it doesn't

It suits almost anyone who can stand for an hour and climb into a waist-high basket. It suits you less if you hate crowds: a standard basket can hold twenty or more people, and at the edge you are elbow to elbow with strangers. It is also a big spend for an hour, and it is not the only way to have the sunrise. Watching from the ridge above Göreme, with a hundred balloons rising around you, costs nothing and on a calm morning is nearly as memorable. We would still fly once. We would not fly twice.

Only licensed companies can operate in the zone, and each balloon carries a Turkish civil registration beginning with TC-. Book directly with a licensed operator, or through your hotel, which usually works with one it trusts. Street agencies in Göreme resell the same flights, and some cannot tell you which company you will fly with. Ask.

The main choice is basket size. Standard flights use large baskets divided into compartments. Comfort or deluxe flights carry fewer people, often fly a little longer and give everyone a place at the rim. Private baskets for two exist too.

Before paying, check that the price includes hotel pickup and drop-off, the breakfast at the launch site, and insurance. Ask what happens if the flight is cancelled. Reputable operators move you to the next morning or refund you in full, and they say so in writing.

• Book for your first morning in Cappadocia, so a cancellation leaves room to rebook.
• Give the operator your hotel name exactly as it appears on your booking.
• Ask about the minimum age for children, since operators set their own, and mention any health issues. Pregnant passengers are not carried.

• Expect a wake-up call. Cancellations can come after you have already been collected. It is annoying, and it is the system working.
• Put the phone down for a while. Take your photos early, then watch the light move across the rock.
• Listen to the landing position. Knees bent, hold the rope handles, back to the direction of travel. Most landings are gentle, a few are bumpy.
• Skip the upsells at landing. Photo packages and videos are sold hard after the flight. Buy only if you want them.
