Cappadocia Hot Air Balloon Guide
On a calm morning over a hundred balloons rise over the valleys around Göreme at the same time. It's one of the most regulated tourist activities in Turkey, and knowing how the system works makes the whole thing less stressful.
Who decides if balloons fly?
Not the company you booked with. Flights are regulated by Turkey's civil aviation authority, SHGM (Sivil Havacılık Genel Müdürlüğü), and each morning a weather assessment decides whether balloons can take off in the Cappadocia flight zone. If the answer is no, every operator stays on the ground. No company can overrule it, so be wary of any seller who promises a flight on a day others have cancelled.
How do I pick an operator?
Only licensed companies can fly, and the number of balloons in the zone is capped. Book directly with a licensed operator or through your hotel, which will usually work with one it trusts. Ask how many passengers go in the basket: standard flights carry large groups, while pricier "deluxe" or "comfort" flights use smaller baskets and often stay up longer. What happens on the morning?
A minibus picks you up from your hotel in the dark, roughly an hour to an hour and a half before sunrise. You'll get tea and a light breakfast at the launch site while the crews inflate the envelopes with fans and burners. The flight itself lasts around an hour on a standard ticket. The pilot chooses the route based on the wind, so no two flights are the same, but most drift over or along valleys like Love Valley, Rose Valley and the plain towards Çavuşin. After landing, often right onto the trailer, there's a small ceremony with a glass of something fizzy and a certificate.
What if it's cancelled?
You'll usually hear very early in the morning, sometimes after you've already been picked up. Reputable operators move you to the next morning free of charge or refund you in full. This is why you should book the balloon for your first morning, not your last.
Is it safe?
The regulation is strict, and the flights that don't happen are part of that. Listen to the landing briefing: knees bent, hold the rope handles, face away from the direction of travel. Operators set their own minimum age for children, and pregnant passengers aren't carried. Check the details with the company before booking.
Can I just watch?

What should I wear?
