Cappadocia Cave Hotels: Where to Stay

Short version: stay in Göreme for your first visit if you don't have a car, Uçhisar if you want quiet and views, Ürgüp if you care more about dinner than being in the middle of the valleys.

Göreme

The village almost everyone passes through. It has the largest number of cave hotels, from simple family guesthouses to boutique places with pools, and it's walking distance from Rose, Red, Love and Pigeon valleys and the Open Air Museum. Balloons often launch nearby and float over the rooftops. The downside is the centre: tour agencies, ATV engines, crowds on the main terraces. Hotels on the slopes above the village are calmer and have better views.

Uçhisar

Higher up, around the rock castle, and much quieter in the evenings. Many hotels here look east over Pigeon Valley towards Göreme, which means sunrise and balloons in the same view. Several of the smarter hotels in the region are here. It's a short drive or bus ride to Göreme, and there's less choice for eating out.

Ürgüp

A real town with shops, a market, wine shops and the widest selection of restaurants. The old quarter on the hill has some beautifully restored stone mansions turned into hotels. It's further from the classic valleys, so a car helps.

Ortahisar and Mustafapaşa

Both suit a second visit or a slower trip. Ortahisar feels like a village where people still farm, with apple and potato stores cut into the rock. Mustafapaşa has Greek-era houses and very few tourists.

What "cave room" actually means

Some rooms are dug fully into the rock, cool in summer and quiet, with rounded ceilings and small windows. Others are stone-built vaulted rooms in front of the rock, or regular rooms with a cave-style finish. None of these is wrong, but look at the photos carefully if a true cave matters to you.

Before you book, check

• Heating, if you're coming between November and March
• How many steps to the room, since lifts are rare
• Whether the terrace faces the balloons (usually towards Göreme and the valleys to the east and north)
• Ventilation and a dehumidifier in true cave rooms, which can feel damp
• Distance from Göreme's main street, if noise bothers you

Book early for spring, autumn and the Turkish holiday weeks. The rooms with a view go first.
