Where to Stay in Rome: A Neighborhood Guide

Short answer: the Centro Storico if you want to walk everywhere, Monti if you want the Colosseum on your doorstep and a real neighbourhood around you. The rest of this guide is about when the other areas make more sense.

Centro Storico

The area around the Pantheon, Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori. You step out of the door into the Rome of postcards, and the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps and Trastevere are all walkable. It's the most expensive area, rooms are often small, and some streets are loud late at night. There's no metro, which matters less than you'd expect.

Monti

Rome's oldest residential quarter, squeezed between the Colosseum and Via Nazionale. Vintage shops, wine bars and a small square, Piazza della Madonna dei Monti, where people sit on the fountain steps in the evening. Close to metro line B at Cavour and Colosseo.

Trastevere

The prettiest streets and the busiest nightlife, across the Tiber. Great for evenings; less so for sleeping, since the bars around Piazza di Santa Maria keep going late. Look for a place on the quieter side, towards Viale di Trastevere or up towards the Gianicolo hill.

Prati

Wide, straight streets next to the Vatican, built in the late 19th century. Calm, safe and well served by metro line A, with good shopping on Via Cola di Rienzo. It lacks the old-city character, which suits families and anyone planning an early Vatican start.

Near Termini

The cheapest central option and unbeatable for arrival: the airport train and the metro are on your doorstep. The streets right around the station are scruffy and feel less safe at night. If you stay here, choose the Esquilino side near Santa Maria Maggiore, or the streets north towards Via XX Settembre.

Before you book

Check for a lift and air conditioning; neither is guaranteed in older buildings. Remember that the city tourist tax is added per person per night and usually paid on arrival. Ground-floor rooms on cobbled streets get scooter noise from early morning.
