Rovaniemi
Capital of Finnish Lapland sitting directly on the Arctic Circle at the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers, combining the glass-tunnel Arktikum Museum, Alvar Aalto civic architecture, Santa Claus Village, husky and reindeer safaris, and Northern Lights glass igloos.
Quick decisions
How many days?
3 days: Arktikum Museum, Pilke and an evening Northern Lights chase on day one, Santa Claus Village, the Arctic Circle line and husky/reindeer safaris on day two, plus Ounasvaara forest trails, Korundi and a traditional lakeside wood-fired sauna with an ice swim on day three. Follow our three-day route.
Where should I stay?
Rovaniemi City Centre: walkable restaurants, Arktikum, shopping and safari pick-up points at half the price of igloo resorts. Ounasvaara Hill: ski-in forest chalets overlooking the river. Arctic Circle (Napapiiri): glass igloos right by Santa Claus Village. Compare areas in our accommodation guide.
Do I need a car?
No. Local Bus 8 and the Santa's Express shuttle link the city centre directly with Santa Claus Village in 15 minutes, and all wilderness safaris include hotel pick-ups.

Overview
Built where Finland's longest river, the Kemijoki, meets the rushing Ounasjoki just six kilometres south of the Arctic Circle (66°33'N), Rovaniemi is the administrative and cultural capital of Finnish Lapland. Flattened almost completely during the Lapland War in October 1944, the town was rebuilt from scratch according to a famous street grid designed by modernist master Alvar Aalto in the shape of a reindeer's head and branching antlers.
While families flock eight kilometres north up Highway E75 to cross the painted white latitude line at Santa Claus Village, the riverfront city centre holds one of the finest museums in the Nordic region inside the 172-metre glass tube of Arktikum, alongside Alvar Aalto's civic buildings and the snow-covered spruce trails of Ounasvaara. By night, Northern Lights chases and lakeside saunas take over. Start with our before-you-go briefing and top things to do in Rovaniemi.
Getting there
Rovaniemi Airport (RVN) lies just ten minutes' drive north of the city centre (and three minutes from Santa Claus Village), served by year-round Finnair flights from Helsinki and dozens of direct winter routes across Europe. Alternatively, board the double-decker VR Santa Claus Express overnight sleeper train in Helsinki or Tampere and wake up in snowy Lapland. Local Linkkari Bus 8 connects the railway station, city centre and Santa Claus Village every hour. See getting to Rovaniemi and how Bus 8 and airport shuttles work.
Where to stay
Choosing between a central riverside hotel in Rovaniemi and a glass igloo resort on the Arctic Circle or Ounasvaara Hill can change your accommodation cost by three hundred percent. Many smart travellers sleep two nights in a walkable central hotel with a sauna and splurge on one final night inside a heated glass igloo. We compare all options in where to stay in Rovaniemi and our glass igloo guide.
Things to do
Walk the subterranean galleries of Arktikum Science Centre and Museum, step across the Arctic Circle at Santa Claus Village, mush a team of Siberian huskies and visit a working reindeer farm, hike the snowy crown of Ounasvaara, and take an excursion to the frozen waterfalls of Korouoma Canyon or Ranua Wildlife Park. Full list in things to do in Rovaniemi.
Food and drink
Lappish cuisine centres on clean subarctic forest and river ingredients: tender sautéed reindeer (poronkäristys) served over mashed Lapland puikula almond potatoes with crushed lingonberries, open-fire blazed salmon (loimulohi) nailed to wooden planks beside a teepee fire, smoky salmon soup, and mild squeaky Lappish baked cheese (leipäjuusto) warmed in cream and topped with golden wild cloudberries (lakka). Read more in our Rovaniemi food guide.
Culture
Lying at the southern gateway to Lapland, Rovaniemi grew as a 19th-century logging, fur-trading and gold-rush market crossroads where Finnish river settlers and indigenous Sámi herders met each winter, before Eleanor Roosevelt's June 1950 visit to a log cabin on the Arctic Circle launched its modern reputation as the official hometown of Santa Claus.
