Visiting Santa Claus Village and Crossing the Arctic Circle (66°33'N)
How to visit Santa Claus Village independently on Bus 8, cross the Arctic Circle line and beat the queues.
Located eight kilometres north-east of central Rovaniemi along Highway 4 (E75), Santa Claus Village (Joulupukin Pajakylä) grew around the log cabin built in one week in June 1950 to welcome Eleanor Roosevelt when she flew to Lapland to witness postwar reconstruction. Today it is an open-air village of timber chalets, reindeer paddocks, design shops and restaurants straddling the Arctic Circle. Knowing three practical rules before you go saves you time and money:
Three Essential Rules Before You Go
- Entry to Santa Claus Village and meeting Santa are 100% free: there is no admission gate and no ticket required to walk the grounds, cross the Arctic Circle line, visit the Main Post Office or meet Santa Claus in his office (open every single day of the year). You only pay if you choose to buy the official photographer's printed photo/video package after your meeting (taking your own photos inside the meeting room is not permitted), or if you pay for short reindeer/husky rides, Snowman World ice slides or Arctic Circle crossing certificates.
- Arrive early in the morning or in the afternoon in December: during core daytime hours in December, the virtual queue system at Santa Claus Office (the tall pointed building in the centre of the square) can reach 2 to 3 hours. Arrive right as the doors open on the first morning Bus 8, or visit the second official meeting spot at Santa's House of Christmas (Christmas House) at the western end of the village, which often has shorter queues.
- Two different mailboxes at Santa Claus' Main Post Office: inside this cheerful post office (an official branch of Finland's national postal service, Posti, where every card is hand-stamped with the special Arctic Circle postmark), look at the two red postboxes: the Yellow/Orange Mailbox sends your cards out immediately like normal mail, whereas anything dropped into the Red Mailbox is stored safely by the elves and posted the following December so it arrives on your friends' doormats right before Christmas.
Crossing the Arctic Circle Line and SantaPark
Stretching across the central plaza between tall white pillars (strung overhead with glowing blue LED cables in winter so you can see the line even when the ground is under a metre of snow) runs Latitude 66°33'45.9" North, the southernmost point where the sun stays above the horizon for 24 hours on the summer solstice and below the horizon on the winter solstice. (Two kilometres south along the highway inside a huge underground rock cavern sits SantaPark, a separate ticketed indoor Christmas theme park with an elf school, ice gallery and underground train ride, popular with families with young children on very cold days).
