3 Days in Rovaniemi: Arktikum, Santa Claus Village, Huskies and Aurora
Three days combining Arktikum, Santa Claus Village, wilderness husky and reindeer safaris and lakeside saunas.
This three-day winter route is designed so you make the most of the midday light (in the late morning to in the afternoon in December/January, longer in February/March) for outdoor safaris and viewpoints, use the late afternoon dark hours for museums, Santa Claus Village illuminations and saunas, and keep all three evenings open for the Northern Lights. Read our practical briefing before Day 1.
Day 1: Arktikum, Pilke, Alvar Aalto Centre & First Northern Lights Night
- Morning: walk ten minutes north from central Rovaniemi to the Arktikum Museum and Science Centre; spend two hours exploring the Sámi heritage galleries, the 1944 wartime exhibition and the 172-metre glass tunnel, followed by the Nordic lunch buffet in the Arktikum Café.
- Midday: step next door into timber-built Science Centre Pilke to climb inside the forestry harvester, then walk south through downtown past the Lumberjack's Candle Bridge to Hallituskatu.
- Afternoon: visit Alvar Aalto's Rovaniemi City Library (admiring the sunken reading pits and ceramic ceiling) and contemporary art at Korundi House of Culture.
- Evening: dine on traditional sautéed reindeer (poronkäristys) and cloudberries at Restaurant Nili or Gustav, then join a late in the evening Northern Lights minibus or lakeside campfire tour (or walk to Arktikum Shore if local skies are clear).
Day 2: Wilderness Husky & Reindeer Safari, Santa Claus Village & Blazed Salmon
- Morning: depart on a morning Wilderness Husky Mushing & Reindeer Farm Safari in the forest valleys outside town, driving a team of huskies through the snow-covered taiga and taking a peaceful reindeer sleigh ride.
- Afternoon: take Local Bus 8 (or get dropped off by your safari transfer) at Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle (66°33'N) just as the afternoon fairy lights come on. Step across the painted latitude line, post cards from the Red Mailbox at the Main Post Office, meet Santa Claus and eat open-fire blazed salmon (loimulohi) inside the wooden teepee at Santa's Salmon Place.
Day 3: Ounasvaara Winter Trail, Lakeside Sauna / Ice Swim (or Korouoma / Ranua)
- Morning Option A (In Rovaniemi): take a short taxi up to the top of Ounasvaara Fell to walk the free 2-kilometre Winter Walking Trail through snow-encrusted tykky spruce trees to the observation tower, followed by hot chocolate at Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara.
- Morning Option B (Day Trip): hike beneath the 60-metre frozen waterfalls of Korouoma Canyon, visit the polar bears at Ranua Wildlife Park, or cruise on the Icebreaker Sampo in Kemi.
- Late Afternoon & Evening: experience a wood-fired lakeside sauna and avanto ice dip (or Arctic ice floating), and spend your final night in a heated Glass Igloo watching the stars.
