Icebreaker sampo in frozen lapland waters

Kemi SnowCastle and Icebreaker Sampo Day Trip from Rovaniemi

Crushing metre-thick sea ice aboard the Icebreaker Sampo and floating in the frozen Gulf of Bothnia.

While Rovaniemi sits inland along fast-flowing rivers, driving 115 kilometres (1 hour 15 minutes by VR train or shuttle coach) south-west brings you to the coastal town of Kemi at the northern tip of the Bothnian Bay (Perämeri), the northernmost arm of the Baltic Sea. Because multiple large Lapland rivers pour fresh water into this shallow bay and winter temperatures drop to -20°C, the entire sea freezes into a solid white desert of pack ice up to a metre thick from late December through April, enabling one of the most extraordinary maritime adventures on earth.

1. Boarding the Icebreaker Sampo (or Arktis)

Built in Helsinki in 1961 to keep Finland's vital northern trade ports open through brutal subarctic winters, the 75-metre steel Icebreaker Sampo (operating alongside the nimble icebreaker Arktis) retired from state duty in the late 1980s and now sails 3.5- to 4-hour passenger voyages out from Ajos port into the frozen Bothnian Bay between mid-December and mid-April:

  • How an icebreaker actually breaks ice: unlike a knife cutting through butter, the spoon-shaped, 20-millimetre-thick steel bow of Sampo uses its 3,500-tonne weight and diesel-electric engines to ride *up on top* of the solid sea ice until the ice cracks and collapses with a deep, thunderous roar underneath the hull.
  • Walking on the Frozen Sea and Ice Floating: halfway out in the white expanse of the bay, the captain parks the ship wedged solid in the ice and lowers a gangway so passengers can walk directly onto the frozen sea in front of the bow. Crew members then zip you into bright orange waterproof thermal rescue suits to float in the dark pool of open seawater crushed behind the stern among bobbing blocks of sea ice.
  • Guided Ship Tour: during the cruise, an audio and guided tour takes you from the roaring engine rooms all the way up to the captain's bridge.

2. Kemi SnowCastle Winter Park & SnowExperience365

Right on the Kemi harbourfront sits the SnowCastle area (LumiLinna), featuring outdoor snow tubes, a winter park (from January to April) and the year-round indoor SnowExperience365 gallery filled with sculpted ice tables, ice slides and snow sculptures, plus a dramatic gemstone gallery and seaside glass villas. Most Icebreaker bookings from Rovaniemi include direct round-trip shuttle pick-up from Rovaniemi hotels and Santa Claus Village.
