Husky Sledding and Reindeer Safaris in Rovaniemi: Short Rides vs Forest Tours

Why booking a longer wilderness forest trail beats the short 2-minute loops at the Arctic Circle.

Riding behind a team of huskies or gliding through a silent spruce forest in a reindeer sleigh is the highlight of a winter trip to Lapland. However, many visitors do not realise until they arrive that there are two completely different types of husky and reindeer experiences in Rovaniemi, and choosing the right one makes all the difference.

Short Village Loops (500m to 2 km) vs True Wilderness Safaris (5 km to 15 km)

  • The Short Loops at Santa Claus Village (Best for toddlers, tight schedules or -25°C days): right inside Santa Claus Village (at Arctic Circle Husky Park and Santa Claus Reindeer), you can buy walk-up or pre-booked tickets for a short 400-metre, 1-kilometre or 2.5-kilometre loop through the trees beside the village. A husky ride of 2 km takes roughly 7 to 10 minutes (guided by a musher while you sit in the sled), while a 400-metre reindeer loop takes 5 minutes. This is ideal if you have very young children who would get cold on a two-hour wilderness tour, or if you just want a quick taste and photo without committing half a day.
  • Wilderness Kennels & Reindeer Farms (Best for adults, couples and older kids, Book ahead): located 20 to 40 minutes outside Rovaniemi in quiet river valleys and frozen lake basins away from highway noise. Here, after picking up thermal overalls and boots, you learn to self-drive (mush) your own team of 4 to 6 Alaskan or Siberian huskies across a 6- to 15-kilometre forest and bog trail (lasting 45 to 90 minutes on the runners), swapping driver and passenger halfway. For reindeer, a wilderness farm visit gives you a peaceful 30-to-45-minute (2.5 to 4 km) forest sleigh ride where the only sound is the clicking of reindeer hooves in the snow, followed by feeding the herd and grilling sausages over a fire inside a wooden kota.

When does snow cover start for sleds?

Permanent snow cover for runner sleds typically arrives between mid-November and late November and lasts until early to mid-April. If you visit in October or early November before the snow is deep enough for runners, kennels run autumn "husky cart" training rides on wheeled quad-carts through the frosty forest.
