Rovaniemi: What to Know Before You Go

How Rovaniemi town connects to the Arctic Circle, euro card payments and winter clothing rules.

Short answer: Rovaniemi is a real university town of 65,000 people located 8 kilometres south of Santa Claus Village; Finland uses the euro and contactless cards work everywhere; safari operators provide outer thermal suits during booked activities; and staying in the city centre while taking Bus 8 to the Arctic Circle saves a small fortune.

How Rovaniemi is Laid Out: City Centre, Ounasvaara and the Arctic Circle

First-time visitors are often surprised to discover that Rovaniemi City Centre and Santa Claus Village (Napapiiri) are two separate places connected by a ten-minute highway drive:

  • Rovaniemi City Centre (6 km south of the Arctic Circle): sits at the confluence of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers around Lordi's Square (Lordin aukio), Koskikatu and Rovakatu. This is where supermarkets, pharmacies, local restaurants, the railway station, the Arktikum Museum and Alvar Aalto's cultural buildings sit.
  • Ounasvaara Fell (3 km east of the centre across the river bridge): a 204-metre forested hill rising directly opposite downtown, holding ski slopes, winter walking trails, a panoramic lookout tower and forest chalets.
  • The Arctic Circle / Napapiiri (8 km north-east of the centre, 3 km from the airport): home to Santa Claus Village, SantaPark (inside an underground rock cavern) and several glass-igloo resorts, reached in 15 minutes from downtown on local Bus 8.

Euros, Contactless Cards and Booking Deadlines

Finland is part of the Eurozone, and Rovaniemi is completely cashless: buses, reindeer sleigh rides at Santa Claus Village, market cafés and public toilets all take contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay and Google Pay in euros (EUR). If you are visiting between late November and early January, book your flights, accommodation, husky safaris and evening restaurant tables three to six months in advance, as December is peak season across Lapland. For quieter trails, deeper snow and lower hotel prices with longer daylight, aim for January, February or March.
