Visiting Rovaniemi in Summer and Autumn: Midnight Sun, River Boats and Ruska
Experiencing 24-hour summer sunlight, wooden riverboat cruises to reindeer farms and golden September ruska.
While 80 percent of international visitors picture Rovaniemi buried under a metre of winter snow, Lapland undergoes an extraordinary transformation between June and October. Within weeks of the river ice breaking up in May, the sun stops setting altogether: from 6 June to 7 July, the Midnight Sun (Yötön yö, "Nightless Night") shines for 24 hours a day, warming afternoon temperatures to 18°C to 25°C, before September brings the golden autumn foliage of ruska and the first dark nights of the Northern Lights season.
Five Essential Summer & Autumn Experiences in Rovaniemi
- Wooden Riverboat Cruises on the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki: in summer and autumn, traditional long wooden riverboats depart from the city-centre pier to cruise along the wide forested channels of the Kemijoki and Ounasjoki rivers to working island and riverbank reindeer farms and kotas, or out onto the water late in the evening to watch the golden Midnight Sun skim the northern horizon at midnight.
- Visiting Huskies and Newborn Reindeer Calves in Summer: reindeer calves are born in May, and during summer you can visit local farms to walk with reindeer through green birch woods and visit husky kennels (where the dogs rest during warm midday hours and greet visitors in grassy runs, or run early-morning autumn training carts once crisp September air returns).
- TheArctic Circle Hiking Area (Napapiirin retkeilyalue, Raudanjoentie, 20 mins north-east): located along the rushing rapids of the Raudanjoki river, this free national hiking reserve features suspension bridges spanning whitewater rapids at Vikaköngäs and Vaattunkiköngäs, boardwalks across fragrant peat bogs (carpeted with white cotton-grass and golden cloudberries in July), and accessibility-friendly campfire shelters.
- Auttiköngäs Waterfall and Virgin Forest (1 hour east of Rovaniemi): one of the most picturesque waterfalls in Finland, where a historic timber-floating flume plunges 16 metres into a rocky gorge surrounded by untouched 300-year-old old-growth taiga forest and a 3.5-kilometre circular nature trail leading to a hilltop lookout tower.
- Koivusaari Nature Trail and Ounasvaara Fatbiking: walk the flat 2.5-kilometre boardwalk around Koivusaari island right in the middle of the river opposite downtown to spot grazing sheep and migratory birds, or rent an electric fatbike on Ounasvaara to ride 50 kilometres of root-and-granite forest singletrack late in the evening in bright sunlight.
