Getting Around Rovaniemi: Local Bus 8, Santa's Express and Taxis

Once you are in Rovaniemi, the city centre itself is compact and flat: walking from Lordi's Square (the central pedestrian plaza) to the riverfront, shopping centres (Revontuli and Rinteenkulma), safari company offices (along Koskikatu and Pekankatu) and Arktikum takes 5 to 12 minutes. When you want to travel along the 10-kilometre spine connecting the Railway Station, the City Centre, SantaPark and Santa Claus Village (Napapiiri), two bus services do the job.

1. Local City Bus 8 ("Linkkari", Cheapest & Year-Round)

Operated by Rovaniemi public transport (Linkkari), Line 8 (Railway Station, City Centre, Napapiiri / Santa Claus Village) is the everyday municipal bus route used by locals and savvy visitors alike:

• The Route and Stops: starts at Rovaniemi Railway Station (Rautatieasema), stops at the Bus Station (Linja-autoasema), runs right through the heart of downtown at Ruokasenkatu / Korkalonkatu (two minutes from Lordi's Square and the central hotels), and drives up Highway 4 to stop outside SantaPark and directly at Santa Claus Village (Napapiiri) in about 20 to 25 minutes.
• Frequency and How to Pay: runs roughly once every hour from early morning until early evening (with extra departures in winter; check the live timetable on the Waltti Mobiili app or Google Maps). You can tap your contactless Visa, Mastercard, Apple Pay or Google Pay directly on the card reader beside the driver when boarding for a standard low local fare, or buy a single / 24-hour ticket in the Waltti Mobiili smartphone app.

2. The "Santa's Express" Shuttle Bus

Running in addition to municipal Bus 8, the privadas red-signed Santa's Express tourist shuttle connects the Railway Station, central hotel stops (such as Santa's Hotel Santa Claus on Korkalonkatu), Ounasvaara, SantaPark, Santa Claus Village and Rovaniemi Airport. It costs slightly more than municipal Bus 8, and tickets are bought contactless from the driver.

3. Taxis and Safari Pick-Ups

During December and February dinner hours, street taxis do not cruise for hails; download the Menevä or 02 Taksi app (or ask your hotel reception to call Lähitaksi / Taksi Rovaniemi) 20 minutes before you need a ride. Remember that almost every booked husky, reindeer or Aurora safari includes free round-trip minibus pick-up from central hotels.
