Where to Stay in Rovaniemi: City Centre, Ounasvaara and the Arctic Circle Compared

Why staying in Rovaniemi City Centre gives you the best restaurants, safari pick-ups and value.

Choosing the right base in Rovaniemi comes down to a clear choice between convenience and dining variety in the City Centre versus waking up in the snow at the Arctic Circle or on Ounasvaara Fell. Because the town and the Arctic Circle are separated by an eight-kilometre highway, review the trade-offs of each zone before booking.

1. Rovaniemi City Centre: Koskikatu, Korkalonkatu and Riverfront (Best for 80% of Visitors)

Staying within five minutes' walk of Lordi's Square (Lordin aukio) in the centre of town is by far the most practical and best-value choice for a 3- or 4-day stay:

  • Every restaurant and café is on your doorstep: at the Arctic Circle, nearly all cafés close in the early evening or in the early evening when Santa Claus Village shuts for the day, leaving only a couple of resort hotel dining rooms. In the City Centre, dozens of Lappish bistros, pubs, supermarkets and bakeries stay open all evening.
  • Safari offices and free pick-ups: major safari operators have their headquarters right on Koskikatu, Pekankatu and Maakunnankatu, so you can walk two minutes to get fitted for thermal overalls and start your tour without spending 40 minutes in a transfer bus.
  • Easy walking to Arktikum and Bus 8: you can walk to the Arktikum Museum and Arktikum Shore (for free Northern Lights viewing) in ten minutes, and catch Bus 8 outside your hotel for a 15-minute visit to Santa Claus Village.

2. Ounasvaara Fell (3 km East of Town, Best for Skiers, Forest Views & Quiet Luxury)

Perched on the 204-metre wooded hilltop directly across the river from downtown. Home to the flagship boutique property Lapland Hotels Sky Ounasvaara (with panoramic rooftop Aurora viewing) and the timber apartments and log chalets of Santasport and Ounasvaara Chalets right at the foot of the ski slopes and winter walking trails. Peaceful, above city light pollution, and a 7-minute taxi ride from downtown restaurants.

3. The Arctic Circle / Napapiiri (8 km North, Best for Glass Igloos & 1-Night Splurges)

Right inside or adjacent to Santa Claus Village and SantaPark (including Santa's Igloos Arctic Circle, Glass Resort, Nova Skyland and Arctic TreeHouse Hotel). Atmospheric snow-covered pine surroundings and immediate access to Santa's office and the airport (3 km away), best booked for one or two special nights.
