Rovaniemi Food Guide: Sautéed Reindeer, Blazed Salmon and Cloudberries
Where to taste authentic Lappish sautéed reindeer, teepee-roasted salmon and golden cloudberry desserts.
Cooking in Lapland has been shaped by short, intense 24-hour summer growing seasons and long sub-zero winters: semi-wild reindeer grazing on mountain lichen and wild mushrooms, fatty salmon and whitefish from cold rivers, tiny sweet almond-shaped potatoes (Lapin puikula) that hold protected EU geographical status, and golden arctic berries harvested from peat bogs. Note that in December through February, central restaurants in Rovaniemi book out every single night; reserve dinner tables online two to four weeks before your trip.
Five Lappish Dishes and Where to Find Them
- Poronkäristys (Traditional Sautéed Reindeer): the undisputed national dish of Lapland. Thinly shaved frozen reindeer meat is sautéed in butter or tallow with a splash of water or dark beer, black pepper and salt until melt-in-the-mouth tender, then heaped atop buttery mashed puikula potatoes alongside tart raw-crushed lingonberries (puolukka) and homemade sweet-and-sour pickled cucumber. Try it at Restaurant Nili (on Valtakatu in the city centre, decorated with hand-carved Lappish timber and antlers) or Gustav Kitchen & Bar.
- Loimulohi (Open-Fire Blazed Salmon inside a Kota Teepee): thick fillets of fresh salmon are pegged with wooden dowels onto vertical cedar or birch boards and stood at an angle beside a roaring open birch-wood fire inside a conical wooden kota for 45 minutes so the fat renders slowly and absorbs the woodsmoke. The most famous spot is Santa's Salmon Place (a timber teepee right beside the Arctic Circle line at Santa Claus Village) and Kotahovi nearby.
- Leipäjuusto ja lakka ("Squeaky" Lappish Baked Cheese with Cloudberries): a mild, flat disc of cow's (or reindeer's) milk cheese baked until spotted golden brown so it squeaks gently against your teeth, served warm in cinnamon-cream and topped with wild cloudberries (lakka / hilla), the amber-gold berry of northern bogs prized across Finland like caviar.
- Lohikeitto & Riekonrinta: creamy salmon soup with fresh dill and dark rye bread at Cafe & Bar 21 (also famous for savoury reindeer/salmon waffles and gelato on Rovakatu), or willow grouse and bear dishes on seasonal tasting menus at Sky Kitchen & View atop Ounasvaara.
- Rovaniemi's Northernmost McDonald's Postcard: for decades Rovaniemi held the title of the world's northernmost McDonald's (now second after Tromsø opened one in 2024); the branch at Lampelankatu still hands out free "Northernmost" postcards at the counter on request and serves the Finnish rye-bread burger, the McRuis.
