How to Get to Salvador: Airport (SSA), Bamboo Corridor, Metro & Ferries
Practical arrival guide for Salvador International Airport (SSA), the iconic bamboo avenue, CCR Metrô Line 2, Uber, and ferries across All Saints' Bay.
Whether you are flying into Bahia directly from Europe, South America, or major Brazilian hubs, arriving in Salvador is straightforward thanks to a modernised international terminal, a direct rapid-transit metro link, and inexpensive ride-hailing apps.

1. Arriving at Salvador International Airport (SSA)
Salvador Deputado Luís Eduardo Magalhães International Airport (IATA: SSA) is located 28 kilometres northeast of the Historic Centre on the border with Lauro de Freitas. Direct international flights connect Salvador with Lisbon, Madrid, Paris, Buenos Aires, Santiago, and Montevideo, alongside dozens of daily domestic flights from São Paulo (GRU, CGH, VCP), Rio de Janeiro (GIG, SDU), Brasília, Belo Horizonte, and Recife.
- The Bamboo Tunnel (Bambuzal do Aeroporto): As you exit the airport complex along Avenida Tenente Frederico Gustavo dos Santos, your car drives through a cool, cathedral-like 1.5-kilometre archway of giant green bamboo (Bambusa vulgaris) planted in the 1950s, one of Brazil's most famous airport welcomes.
- Airport to Barra, Rio Vermelho, or Pelourinho: The easiest door-to-door option is Uber or 99 (with a dedicated ride-hailing pick-up zone outside the arrivals level) or a pre-paid airport taxi, taking 25 minutes to Itapuã, 35 minutes to Rio Vermelho, and 40 to 45 minutes to Barra or Pelourinho.
- CCR Metrô Bahia (Line 2): A free air-conditioned shuttle bus runs every 10 to 15 minutes from the airport arrivals curb to Aeroporto Metro Station. From there, Line 2 trains connect to the long-distance bus terminal (Rodoviária) and transfer at Acesso Norte to Line 1 for Campo da Pólvora and Lapa stations near the Historic Centre; check the official CCR Metrô Bahia portal for current operating hours.

2. Long-Distance Buses (Rodoviária) and Coastal Highway BA-099
Interstate and regional buses arrive at the Terminal Rodoviário de Salvador in the central Pernambués district (directly linked to Rodoviária Metro Station), with frequent services to Lençóis and the Chapada Diamantina highlands (6 hours), Porto Seguro, and Aracaju. If you rent a car to visit Praia do Forte and the Coconut Coast, toll highway BA-099 (Estrada do Coco / Linha Verde) begins immediately north of the airport.

3. Getting Around the City: Historic Lifts, Uber, and Maritime Terminals
- Between Upper and Lower City: Instead of climbing steep colonial stone ramps (ladeiras) in the midday heat, ride the 72-metre Elevador Lacerda at Praça Municipal or the funicular railway Plano Inclinado Gonçalves right behind the Cathedral on Praça da Sé.
- Boat Terminals: Catamarans to Morro de São Paulo and day schooners to Ilha dos Frades depart from the Terminal Náutico da Bahia right behind Mercado Modelo, while hourly commuter ferries to Itaparica Island depart from the Terminal de São Joaquim further north in Cidade Baixa.
