Şanlıurfa: What to Know Before You Go
Linking downtown Balıklıgöl with Göbeklitepe, sacred-site etiquette, contactless cards and seasonal timing.
Short answer: pair your trip to Göbeklitepe with the Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum (where the original sculptures and the Urfa Man live), tap any contactless bank card on Municipal Bus 100 to reach Göbeklitepe for a tiny local fare, dress modestly around the sacred pilgrimage pools of Balıklıgöl, and never try to catch or touch the sacred carp in the pools.
How Şanlıurfa's Historic Core is Laid Out
All major sights inside central Şanlıurfa sit along a continuous 1.5-kilometre north-to-south green belt on the western edge of the Old Town (Eyyübiye and Haliliye):
- North (Haleplibahçe & Kızılkoyun): the monumental Şanlıurfa Archaeology Museum and Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum stand right across the plaza from the illuminated Roman rock tombs of Kızılkoyun Necropolis.
- South (Balıklıgöl, Castle & Bazaars): a flat 8-minute walk south through the park brings you directly to the spring-fed pools of Balıklıgöl (Halil-ür Rahman and Aynzeliha) at the foot of Urfa Castle, while immediately east of the pools open the vaulted 16th-century lanes of Gümrük Hanı and the Covered Bazaars.
- Surrounding Sites: Göbeklitepe lies 18 km north-east (25 mins); Harran lies 44 km south (40 mins); and Karahantepe lies 55 km south-east (50 mins).
Respectful Etiquette at Balıklıgöl and Cave of Abraham
While Göbeklitepe and the Museums are archaeological tourist sites, the complex around Balıklıgöl and the Cave of Abraham's Birth (Mevlid-i Halil) is one of the most active Islamic and Abrahamic pilgrimage sanctuaries in Turkey. Both men and women should keep shoulders and knees covered when walking through the mosque courtyards, and women must wear a headscarf and ankle-length skirt/trousers when stepping inside the Cave of Abraham (separate men's and women's rock-cut entrances). According to centuries-old local taboo, the carp swimming in Halil-ür Rahman and Aynzeliha lakes are sacred, visitors buy tiny saucers of fish food for a few lira to feed them, but catching or harming them is strictly forbidden.
Museum Pass Turkey & Contactless Cards
The Museum Pass Turkey covers Göbeklitepe, the Şanlıurfa Archaeology & Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum, Urfa Castle and Harran Ruins, paying for itself on Day 1. Contactless Visa and Mastercard cards work on all city buses (including Bus 100 to Göbeklitepe).
