Where to Stay in Şanlıurfa: Old Town Stone Mansions (Konaklar) vs Modern Haliliye
Choosing between sleeping inside a carved limestone courtyard mansion near Balıklıgöl or a 5-star hotel by the Museum.
Unlike Mardin (where the Old Town sits on a steep mountain cliff with hundreds of stairs), historic Old Şanlıurfa is mostly flat or gently sloping, meaning you can enjoy the magic of sleeping inside a 200-year-old carved limestone courtyard mansion (konak) without exhausting stair climbs, while modern five-star chain hotels sit just ten minutes away on the main avenues.
1. Old Urfa: Around Balıklıgöl, Divanyolu & Kara Meydan (Best for Atmosphere & Walkability)
Stretching between Balıklıgöl, the Historic Bazaars and pedestrian-friendly Divanyolu (Atatürk Caddesi / Kapaklı Pasajı). Staying here lets you walk out to the sacred pools after dinner when the tour buses have left and the castle cliffs are floodlit in gold, walk to the Archaeology Museum in ten minutes, and wake up inside a cool, high-ceilinged stone room opening onto a fountain courtyard. Look for landmark heritage restorations, such as El-Ruha Hotel (a grand five-star-style stone palace right opposite Balıklıgöl), Manici Hotel, Türkmen Konağı, Harran / Şehrazat Konakları or boutique mansions in the quiet lanes behind Yıldız Meydanı and 12 Eylül Caddesi. (Tip if driving a car: ask your Old Town mansion hotel in advance for the exact location of their partner parking lot, as narrow stone alleys are one-way).
2. Haliliye: Haleplibahçe, Piazza & Abide Junction (Best for 5-Star Chain Hotels, Museums & Bus 100)
Immediately north and north-east of the Old Town between the Haleplibahçe Mosaic Museum / Piazza Shopping Mall and Abide Junction. This is the most convenient modern base in the city: five-star international and domestic chain hotels (such as DoubleTree by Hilton, Hilton Garden Inn right next to the Archaeology Museum, Dedeman and Nevali Hotel at Abide) offer spacious underground car parks, indoor swimming pools, spa facilities and elevators, while keeping you a 5-to-15-minute walk from Balıklıgöl and right at the departure stop for Havaş airport coaches and Bus 100 to Göbeklitepe.
3. Karaköprü (7 km north, Best for Highway Stopovers by Car)
Along the northern Diyarbakır highway near the Intercity Bus Terminal (Otogar); clean, modern apartments and transit hotels for road-trippers.
