Things to Do in Bogotá: Best Attractions, Museums and Mountain Views

From the 34,000 gold pieces in the Museo del Oro and Botero's volumetric sculptures to the summit of Monserrate and Sunday Ciclovía, explore top Bogotá sights.

Bogotá rewards travellers who balance its world-class museum collections in the historic core with high-altitude viewpoints, open-air fruit markets, and highland excursions across the Cundinamarca savanna. Because major cultural institutions in the centre sit within a compact walking radius, you can pair pre-Columbian metallurgy and colonial plazas in the morning with mountain panoramas or northern neighbourhood walks in the afternoon.

Marvel at Pre-Hispanic Goldwork in the Museo del Oro

Managed by the Banco de la República on the edge of Parque Santander, the Museo del Oro preserves more than 34,000 pieces of pre-Columbian gold and tumbaga (a sacred alloy of gold and copper) alongside 20,000 ceramic, stone, and textile objects. Its third-floor Offering Room illuminates the famous Muisca Raft (Balsa Muisca), discovered in a cave in Pasca in 1969, which portrays the investiture ritual on Lake Guatavita that gave rise to the legend of El Dorado.

Explore the Cultural Block and Museo Botero

A ten-minute walk south on Calle 11 leads to the Banco de la República cultural block in La Candelaria. Inside a restored colonial mansion around a planted courtyard, the Museo Botero exhibits 123 paintings, drawings, and bronze sculptures donated by Colombian artist Fernando Botero in 2000, alongside 85 works from his personal collection by Picasso, Monet, Renoir, Dalí, and Giacometti. Connected galleries lead directly into the 1621 Casa de Moneda and the Miguel Urrutia Art Museum (MAMU).

Cross Plaza de Bolívar and Climb La Candelaria

At the civic heart of Colombia, Plaza de Bolívar surrounds Pietro Tenerani's 1846 bronze statue of Simón Bolívar with the twin-towered Catedral Primada (built 1807 to 1823), the stone colonnade of the Capitolio Nacional, and the French-inspired Palacio Liévano. From the square, climb east up Calle 10 and Calle 11 past timber-balconied colonial homes to Plazoleta del Chorro de Quevedo and the mural-lined lane of Calle del Embudo.

Ride the Sunday Ciclovía and Browse Usaquén

On Sundays and public holidays, join locals on the Ciclovía, when over 120 kilometres of main avenues close to motor traffic from morning until early afternoon, or head north to browse the artisan stalls of the Usaquén Sunday flea market.
