How to Get to Guayaquil: Olmedo Airport (GYE), Galápagos Flights, Aerovía & Buses

Practical transport guide to Guayaquil, Ecuador: direct international and Galápagos flights at José Joaquín de Olmedo Airport (GYE), the three-level Terminal Terrestre, Metrovía BRT, and the Aerovía cable car.

Unlike high-altitude Andean capitals whose airports sit far outside town in mountain valleys, Guayaquil boasts one of the most conveniently located international airports in South America, sitting right inside the northern urban grid along Avenida de las Américas just ten to fifteen minutes from the Río Guayas waterfront.

1. By Air: José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport (IATA: GYE) & Galápagos Flights

  • Direct International, Quito & Galápagos Connections: Located only five kilometres north of Malecón 2000, Guayaquil Airport (GYE) handles direct flights from North America (Miami, New York JFK, Fort Lauderdale), Europe (Madrid and Amsterdam), and Latin America (Bogotá, Lima, Santiago, Panama City, Buenos Aires, and San José), alongside hourly 50-minute shuttle flights from Quito (UIO). Crucially, almost every flight to the Galápagos Islands (Baltra GPS and San Cristóbal SCY, 1 hour 50 minutes) either originates in Guayaquil or makes a brief stop here from Quito.
  • Mandatory Galápagos Departure Steps at GYE: If you are boarding a Galápagos flight at Guayaquil, arrive at the domestic terminal at least two and a half to three hours before departure to complete two mandatory steps before airline check-in: 1) collect or validate your TCT (Tarjeta de Control de Tránsito) at the Consejo de Gobierno de Galápagos counter, and 2) pass all checked and carry-on bags through the ABG (Biosecurity Agency) X-ray inspection tables.

2. Terminal Terrestre (Buses to Cuenca & the Coast), Metrovía & the Aerovía Cable Car

  • Terminal Terrestre de Guayaquil "Jaime Roldós Aguilera": Situated immediately north of the airport runway along Avenida Benjamín Rosales, Guayaquil's three-storey bus terminal operates like an airport shopping mall. Frequent coaches and executive minibuses depart across the spectacular 4,100-metre pass of El Cajas National Park to Cuenca (3.5 to 4 hours), west to the Pacific beaches of General Villamil Playas (1.5 hours), Salinas, and Montañita (2.5 to 3 hours), and north to Quito (8 hours).
  • Getting Around (Taxis, Metrovía BRT & the Aerovía Gondola): Official yellow taxis with green municipal registration stickers (and ride-hailing apps) are inexpensive and the safest way to travel door-to-door between the airport, Malecón 2000, Urdesa, and Parque Histórico in Samborondón. For a scenic 20-minute aerial ride across the full width of the Río Guayas, board the Aerovía suspended cable car (opened in December 2020) at the Parque Centenario or Julián Coronel / Malecón stations.
