Houston with children

Houston suits families who accept its scale, with the best child friendly sites clustered together and indoor stops balancing the climate.

Houston is an easy city for families once you accept its scale. Attractions are spread across a vast area, but many of the very best ones for children cluster in a few places, and the climate rewards a plan that mixes indoor wonders with short bursts of outdoor play. We have built a rhythm over the years that works for toddlers and teenagers alike.

The Museum District for rainy and very hot days

The Children's Museum Houston is a noisy, hands-on building with an indoor waterworks, a construction zone and a pretend city where small people run shops and clinics. Nearby, the Houston Museum of Natural Science has dinosaur skeletons, a gem hall, a planetarium and a butterfly centre, and the entire area is walkable. Our Houston Museum of Natural Science guide shows how to pace a visit with younger children, who tire faster than the exhibits run out.

Hermann Park and the zoo

Hermann Park is where we send families who need space. The Hermann Park Railroad is a miniature train that circles the grounds, McGovern Lake has paddle boats, and the Japanese Garden offers a calm spot for a snack. The Houston Zoo sits on the park's edge, with giraffe feeding, a children's area and a good range of primates and big cats. Details of the two are on our pages for Hermann Park and the zoo, and the METRORail Red Line stops close to both.

Playing in the city centre

Discovery Green, in Downtown, has a playground, a splash area, a lake with small boats and regular family events on the lawn, and it is one of the easiest places to burn off energy between meals. Buffalo Bayou Park has a large dog park, wide paths for scooters and bikes, and the glowing Cistern, a former underground reservoir, which older children often find fascinating. We bring snacks and shade hats to both.

Space and science

Space Center Houston, beside Clear Lake, holds a tram tour through NASA's working campus, a hands-on area for younger children and the vast Saturn V rocket hall. Plan a whole day, and note that it is a drive from the centre, so we leave early. For a detailed look at what to expect, our Space Center Houston page lays out the route.

Coast and fairground days

The Kemah Boardwalk has rides, a carousel, a Ferris wheel and waterside restaurants, and the Clear Lake and Kemah guide explains how to pair it with a NASA visit. On a longer day we drive to Galveston for the beach and Moody Gardens, which has a rainforest pyramid and an aquarium. In late winter, the rodeo carnival at NRG Park delights children with its barns and midway.

Food for fussy eaters

Houston is forgiving to young palates. Kolaches, the Czech-Texan pastries filled with sausage or fruit, are a breakfast winner, tacos are easy to share, and barbecue joints serve mild sides alongside the smoky brisket. Most restaurants welcome children without fuss, and many have patios with fans or misters.

Evenings that suit small travellers

Early dinners keep everyone happy, and the city obliges. Market Square Park has open lawn and a dog run in the old Downtown core, and the lights along Buffalo Bayou make a gentle after-dinner stroll. Hotels near the Museum District and Hermann Park are the most convenient bases, since a short walk or train ride reaches the main sights without a long drive each morning.

Practical notes for parents

Heat is the chief risk, so we schedule outdoor time early and keep afternoons indoors. Carry water and sunscreen at all times. Car seats are required in Texas for young children, so reserve them when you hire a vehicle. The METRORail is safe and fun for children, and a ride on a train often counts as an attraction in its own right.
