Three days in Houston
This three day plan groups each Houston day into one compact area, keeps driving low and balances indoor and outdoor stops for the heat.
Three days is enough to feel Houston without rushing, provided you accept that this is a city of districts rather than a single centre. We have arranged the days so that each one sits in a compact area, keeps driving to a minimum and balances indoor and outdoor time for a hot climate. Treat the plan as a frame, and swap days around depending on weather. Add the rail map to your phone before landing, and keep the evenings loose, since Houston dinners tend to run long and conversation spills onto patios.
Day one: museums, park and university
Begin in the Museum District, where nineteen institutions sit within walking distance of each other. Our Museum District guide helps choose among them, and we like to pair the Museum of Fine Arts with the Natural Science museum if energy allows. The afternoon moves into Hermann Park, along the Japanese Garden and across to the zoo, followed by a stroll through Rice Village and Rice University, where shaded streets and oak trees soften the heat.
The METRORail Red Line connects the museums, the park and Downtown, so this day needs no car. Dinner in Rice Village or Midtown finishes it neatly.
Day two: Downtown, bayou and history
Start with coffee in Downtown Houston, then walk to Market Square Park and the old streets of the Historic District, where Houston's founding in 1836 still feels close. The Theater District holds the opera, ballet and symphony, and its plazas reward a visit even if you attend nothing. After lunch, move to Buffalo Bayou Park for the Cistern, a vaulted underground reservoir lit by soft light, and follow the trail as the skyline brightens at dusk.
Evening options include a performance in the Theater District, or dinner at Discovery Green, where the lawn and lake draw locals after work. Walk or use the rail, because parking Downtown is a chore.
Day three: choose a direction
Here the plan splits by interest. Space lovers should hire a car for the drive to Clear Lake, where Space Center Houston fills a whole day. Coast lovers may prefer Galveston, an hour south, with its Strand, beaches and Seawall. Neighbourhood explorers should stay in town and spend the day in Montrose, with the Menil Collection and Rothko Chapel, then ride out to the Heights for its bungalows, boutiques and breweries.
We usually pick the space route for first-time visitors, since nothing else in the United States matches the combination of working mission control and artefacts on view. Look at the forecast the night before, because storms can change the plan.
Eating across the three days
Houston rewards a hungry traveller, and each day above lines up with a different corner of the menu. Breakfast should be a kolache, a Czech-Texan pastry, from one of the bakeries our breakfast guide describes. Lunch can be Tex-Mex or Vietnamese, and dinner is the moment for brisket or Viet-Cajun crawfish, depending on the season. Our food overview maps these tastes against the neighbourhoods on your route.
Getting around the three days
We combine the rail for the first two days with a rental or rideshare on the third. If you land at Hobby, you are closer to the Gulf side of the plan, and Bush suits the city-centre route. Book space and theatre tickets ahead, and carry water at all times, since the humidity is persistent even in cooler months.
If you have more time
An extra day suits the Heights, EaDo or a Chinatown crawl along Bellaire Boulevard, and a rodeo or a ball game turns a spare evening into a local ritual. Houston never runs out of things to eat, see or argue about, and we leave each trip already planning the next.
