Clear Lake and Kemah Boardwalk
The Clear Lake area where Houston meets Galveston Bay pairs NASA seriousness with a cheerful waterfront at Kemah, Seabrook and Clear Lake Shores.
South-east of Houston, the Clear Lake area is where the city meets Galveston Bay, and it pairs two quite different moods: the engineering seriousness of NASA and the boat-shoe cheerfulness of a Gulf Coast waterfront. Kemah, Seabrook and Clear Lake Shores sit a short distance from one another, which makes the whole district a satisfying day or an easy half day beside a space visit.
Why the space story lands here
Clear Lake exists in its present form largely because NASA arrived in the early 1960s, when the agency chose land donated near Houston for the Manned Spacecraft Center, later renamed the Johnson Space Center. Marinas, restaurants and neighbourhoods grew up around the astronauts and engineers who moved in. Our pages on Space Center Houston and NASA Johnson Space Center explain what to see inside the fence, and we usually save the waterfront for the afternoon after those hours indoors.
Kemah Boardwalk
The Kemah Boardwalk is a landscaped waterfront of restaurants, shops, a carousel, a Ferris wheel, a train and a small wooden roller coaster, with a hotel and an aquarium-themed restaurant on the quay. It is touristy and unashamedly so, and children love it. We go for the sunset, when the light turns gold on the masts and the lines of pelicans glide along the channel. Weekends in summer are crowded, so we prefer weekdays or the shoulder seasons.
Seafood in Seabrook and Kemah
Next door in Seabrook, the shrimp boats still dock along Todville Road, and several casual restaurants serve the day's catch. Expect fried shrimp, Gulf oysters, blackened redfish and gumbo, usually eaten at a table on a deck with a view of the water. The Gulf Coast influence is as strong here as in Galveston, and our Houston food guide places these waterfront meals in the wider picture of local cooking.
On the water
Clear Lake is one of the leading sailing centres in Texas, and the marinas hold thousands of boats. Visitors can join a harbour cruise, rent a kayak or take a fishing charter for speckled trout and redfish, and the calmer inlets suit beginners. We bring sun protection and a light jacket, because wind off the bay cools evenings more than expected. Tropical storms can close the waterfront, so the weather and trip planning guide deserves a read before you book any boat activity, since wind and storms decide whether the bay is calm.
Getting here
No train serves the area, so we drive, heading down Interstate 45 and then following NASA Road 1 or the Kemah exit. Hobby Airport is the nearest of the two big airports, and our airport transfer guide explains why we choose it for coastal trips. A hire car is helpful, since distances between the spots are too long for walking, and a rideshare back at night can be slow to arrive.
Making it a family day
With children, we start at NASA, eat lunch in Seabrook and finish with the Kemah rides, which makes for a long but satisfying day. Our page on Houston with children offers other combinations. For anyone with a car and energy to spare, Galveston lies about half an hour farther along the coast, and our Galveston day trip guide describes that route.
Birds and quiet corners
Away from the boardwalk, Armand Bayou Nature Center protects prairie, forest and marsh close to the lake, and its boardwalks and canoe trips suit anyone who wants a quieter side of the coast. Herons, egrets and roseate spoonbills are common, and the bayou feels a world away from the freeway. Trails are flat and shaded in parts, which suits families with young children. Bring insect repellent in summer, because mosquitoes are a fact of life on this coast.
