Houston Heights
The Heights was founded in 1891 as a streetcar suburb, and its Queen Anne cottages and corner shops keep a small town air close to the city.
The Heights is where Houston goes to remember it was once a collection of small towns. Founded in 1891 as a planned streetcar suburb on high ground above White Oak Bayou, it ran as an independent city until Houston annexed it in 1918, and its Queen Anne cottages, bungalows and corner shops still give it a stubbornly small-town air. We love it for porch culture, independent shops and an easy, walkable pace that the rest of the city rarely matches.
Heights Boulevard and the grand old houses
Heights Boulevard is the neighbourhood's showpiece: a wide, oak-shaded esplanade lined with Victorian and Craftsman homes, with a jogging path running down the grassy median. Locals run, walk dogs and cycle here from early morning, and the verandas make the whole street feel like a stage set. Walk a few blocks east or west and the houses become smaller and more varied, but the sense of an old Texas suburb stays.
Nineteenth Street, the trail and the bayou
West 19th Street is the commercial strip, a few blocks of independent boutiques, vintage sellers, antiques and gift shops, with the old Heights Theater anchoring one side. Restaurants and bars fill the neighbouring blocks, so a casual stroll easily becomes lunch and then an early evening drink. Parts of the Heights were long dry under local rules, and the bar scene is younger than the houses suggest. Our page on Houston coffee, breweries and evenings collects further ideas, and Shopping in Houston covers the bigger retail picture beyond this strip.
An old rail corridor now carries the Heights Hike and Bike Trail, a paved ribbon that runs through the neighbourhood and links to the White Oak Bayou greenway. Cyclists can pedal toward downtown on trails that follow the water, while walkers enjoy the shade of mature oaks and the small parks that pop up along the way. After the heat of Westheimer, this is a calmer route, and we recommend taking it in the early morning or at dusk, when mosquitoes are the only real complaint and the light through the oaks is lovely.
Breakfast, bakeries and breweries
The Heights is a natural place to start the day. Bakeries sell pastries and kolaches, cafes run brunch crowds, and weekend queues form outside the most popular spots. For a deeper look at Texas morning food, Houston breakfast, kolaches and bakeries explains what to order and where the Czech-Texan tradition fits in. We suggest arriving early at weekends to beat the line.
Just south of the neighbourhood, Saint Arnold Brewing Company, Texas' oldest craft brewery, sits in a large hall with a beer garden, and the industrial blocks around Sawyer Yards hold artists' studios and creative workspaces. A short ride brings you to the trails of Buffalo Bayou Park, so the Heights fits neatly into a loop that includes green space. Murals around the district feature in Houston public art and murals.
Connections, weather and timing
The Heights lies about fifteen minutes by car from Downtown Houston and is a short drive from Montrose, so the two neighbourhoods suit a shared day or evening. Neither is served by METRORail, so plan for a rideshare, a bus or a car. Traffic builds on weekday afternoons along the main roads, so allow extra time before a dinner reservation.
Summer heat in the Heights is intense, but the tree canopy softens it more than in many parts of the city. Storms can flood low streets quickly, and the bayou trails sometimes close after heavy rain. Go on a mild weekend morning, wear comfortable shoes and bring water, and the neighbourhood will reward you with an unhurried feel that is rare in a city of this size.
