Market Square Park and Main Street

Market Square Park is the small green heart of old Houston, and Main Street runs south from it past patios, murals and brick warehouses.

Market Square Park is the small green heart of old Houston, and Main Street is the spine that runs south from it through the downtown core. Together they make the easiest walking evening in the city centre: brick warehouses, patios, murals, a dog run and a tram line, all within a few blocks. We often start here after a day among the museums and finish with a late dinner, which is how locals tend to use it too.

The square itself

Market Square Park occupies a plot where the city's first market house once stood, and its tidy lawn, café patio and tall trees now give the area a European feel. Dogs get their own fenced run, and on a mild evening the whole place fills with office workers, bar patrons and people passing through. The square forms part of the larger Houston Historic District, so you can step from a modern coffee into nineteenth-century commercial history in a few paces.

Along Main Street by rail

The Red Line of METRORail runs along Main Street from the north side through downtown, Midtown and the Museum District to the Medical Center and NRG Park, and the stretch through downtown is one of the most convenient places to hop on and off. Stops at Main Street Square and Preston give quick access to restaurants and galleries, and the trains are a cheap way to ride south toward the Museum District. Our guide to METRORail and Houston public transport explains ticket machines, platforms and rail etiquette before you board.

Bars, music and late evenings

Houston's nightlife around the square is casual rather than glossy. Small bars occupy converted warehouses, patios spill onto the pavement, and live music turns up in odd corners. For a deeper dive into cocktails, beer and coffee, Houston coffee, breweries and evenings maps the wider scene, while the theatre crowd often drifts here after the curtain falls at the nearby Houston Theater District.

Murals, bricks and street-level detail

Old buildings along Main Street display faded advertising, cast-iron columns and arched windows, while murals add colour to the plain side walls. Public art is easy to find on foot, and our page on Houston public art and murals will help you build a gallery walk around the district. We recommend walking one side of the street and returning on the other, as the shopfronts and side alleys are different in each direction.

South to Midtown

Main Street keeps going past the last downtown towers and slides into Midtown Houston, where the bar and restaurant scene gets younger and louder. The train makes the hop in a couple of stops, which is the sensible choice on a humid night when a long walk on hot pavement is less appealing than it sounds. We like to eat early downtown, then ride south for drinks.

Food between the blocks

Dining options run from Texas steaks and smoked brisket to Mexican seafood and Vietnamese rice plates, because the city's immigrant communities have all left their mark on the downtown menu. A cluster of places around the square makes it easy to choose on the spot, and weekend evenings call for a reservation, so we phone ahead when the group is larger than four. Dishes such as queso, enchiladas and chicken-fried steak are on many menus and suit the heat better than you might think.

Staying comfortable downtown

Summer afternoons can be fierce, with heat rising from the pavement and humidity that drains energy within minutes. We plan outdoor time for early evening, dip into the tunnels or cafés when the sun is high, and keep water handy. Downtown can feel empty on Sunday mornings because the office workforce is away, so we save quieter walking for then and time busier visits for weekday evenings and Saturday nights. Take care crossing the rail line, as trains run quietly and cyclists also use the road.
