Houston coffee, breweries and evenings
Houston evenings run from serious coffee roasters to Texas's oldest craft brewery, with live music clubs and bars from dive to rooftop.
Houston's evenings start with coffee and end with a beer, and the city has plenty to offer in between. It has a serious roasting scene, Texas's oldest craft brewery, live music clubs dating back decades and bars that range from dive to rooftop. Because the heat gives way to a milder night, evenings are when Houston feels at its most relaxed, and we plan many of our days around them.
Coffee in Montrose and beyond
Independent roasters cluster in Montrose, where Blacksmith and Siphon Coffee serve careful espresso and pour-overs in friendly rooms. Cafés in the Heights, Midtown and EaDo follow the same pattern, and most open for early risers. A Vietnamese iced coffee with condensed milk is the local twist, and it tastes best on a humid afternoon.
Many cafés double as workspaces and gallery rooms, with local art on the walls and neighbourhood regulars at the tables, which makes them a gentle introduction to the city.
Saint Arnold and Houston's breweries
Saint Arnold Brewing Company, founded in 1994 and widely regarded as the oldest craft brewery in Texas, has a beer hall and garden just north of downtown with big communal tables and a view of the tanks. In EaDo and the East End, 8th Wonder Brewery and its neighbours sit a short walk from the stadiums, so a pint before a game is easy.
Tours and tasting rooms in the Houston area often include food trucks, board games and dog-friendly patios, so a brewery visit can fill an easy afternoon. Buffalo Bayou Brewing and Karbach offer more variety if you want to compare styles.
Live music
The Continental Club on Main Street keeps the old Texas tradition of honky-tonk, blues and rockabilly in a small neon-lit room, and White Oak Music Hall stages larger concerts north of downtown. The House of Blues sits near the theatres, and jazz spots such as Cezanne in Montrose provide quieter evenings. Plan for late starts, as many gigs begin well after dinner.
Check the schedule before you go, since big venues sell out and smaller clubs often add last-minute local acts.
Houston has long been a city of blues, Tejano, zydeco and hip hop, and local clubs reflect the diversity of the audience.
Evenings downtown
A summer evening at Discovery Green is a pleasant start, with food trucks, open lawns and free events in the cool air. Nearby, the Theater District pairs opera, ballet and symphony with restaurants before curtain. After a show, rooftop bars and lounges around Main Street stay busy into the night.
Many restaurants offer pre-show menus, so tell the staff about your curtain time when you book.
Bars in Montrose and Midtown
Montrose is home to Houston's gay bars, craft cocktail rooms, dives and wine bars, with Westheimer Road and Montrose Boulevard providing the main strip. Midtown has a younger crowd with patios, sports bars and late kitchens along Main and Bagby streets. Both are walkable, which is rare in Houston, so you can wander between several bars on foot.
Houston bars may be quiet early in the week, then fill very quickly on Friday and Saturday evenings, so expect lines at the best-known rooms.
Getting home safely
Houston is a driving city, and the sensible plan after a night out is a rideshare. The Red Line of METRORail runs along Main Street through Midtown and downtown and can be a convenient link between venues, as our METRORail guide describes. Drink water in the heat, and keep an eye on summer storms that can flood underpasses quickly.
Houston nights are long, and a late dinner followed by a drink is normal, so do not be shy about starting the evening after sunset when the heat softens.
