Best time to visit Naples: Mediterranean seasons, weather and Christmas alleys
Spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October) bring warm 19°C to 27°C days ideal for walking Spaccanapoli and Pompeii, while December fills Via San Gregorio Armeno with nativity art.
Sheltered on the north by the hills of Vomero and Capodimonte and warmed by the Tyrrhenian Sea, Naples enjoys a classic Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa) that makes its museums, churches, and historic streets rewarding throughout the year. According to official 1991 to 2020 meteorological normals recorded at Naples Capodichino Airport (WMO station 16289), the city averages 1,008.2 millimetres of annual precipitation spread across 86.5 wet days, leaving long stretches of clear coastal light in every season.

Spring (April to June): ideal temperatures for Pompeii and city walks
Spring is widely regarded as the best overall window for a first trip to Naples. Average daily highs climb from 16.4°C in March and 19.4°C in April to 23.6°C in May and 27.7°C in June, while monthly wet days drop from 9.3 days in April to 6.1 days in May and just 3.3 days in June. These mild conditions are particularly important if you plan to spend a full day exploring the shadeless stone streets of Pompeii, Herculaneum, and the Mount Vesuvius crater trail. Across the city, wisteria and citrus trees bloom inside the majolica cloister of Santa Chiara and across the 134-hectare park of the Real Bosco di Capodimonte. In May, Naples also stages Maggio dei Monumenti, a municipal cultural programme featuring guided walks and special openings of historic palazzi, and celebrates the spring feast of San Gennaro on the Saturday before the first Sunday in May at Naples Cathedral.
Summer (July and August): sea breezes and island crossings
July and August are the hottest and driest months in Naples, with average afternoon highs reaching 30.4°C in July and 31.0°C in August (and overnight lows hovering around 20.9°C to 21.4°C). Rainfall is minimal, averaging only 2.4 wet days in July (29 mm) and 3.7 wet days in August (36 mm). Because the narrow canyons of Spaccanapoli and the Centro Storico were built tall and close together in antiquity, their lower lanes remain shaded for much of the day, while the marble halls of the National Archaeological Museum and Capodimonte offer cool midday refuges. If you visit in midsummer, start archaeological excursions at opening time and spend late afternoons walking the breezy Lungomare Caracciolo seafront or taking hydrofoils across the bay.

Autumn (September to November): warm seas, Saint Gennaro, and autumn rains
September retains warm summer-like afternoons (26.8°C average high, 17.6°C low, 6.1 wet days) without the peak August holiday crowds. On 19 September, thousands gather inside and outside Naples Cathedral for the principal annual liturgical feast of Saint Januarius (Festa di San Gennaro), celebrating the traditional liquefaction of the saint's relic blood. October remains mild and pleasant at 23.0°C average high, though autumn Atlantic fronts increase monthly rainfall to 136 mm across 8.5 wet days, peaking in November (18.3°C high, 152 mm across 10.2 wet days). Keep an indoor backup list ready for rainy afternoons, including the Royal Palace of Naples and Galleria Umberto I.

Winter (December to March): crisp skies and the nativity workshops of San Gregorio Armeno
Winter in Naples is mild by European standards, with daytime highs averaging 14.3°C in December, 13.4°C in January, and 13.9°C in February, and overnight lows rarely dipping below 4.7°C to 5.9°C. December is one of the liveliest months in the historic centre: along Via San Gregorio Armeno, master craftsmen display elaborate cork-and-terracotta Neapolitan nativity cribs (presepi) alongside miniature figurines of historical and contemporary characters. January and February bring the quietest museum queues of the year and crystal-clear winter views of snow-dusted Mount Vesuvius across the gulf.
