3 Days in Vienna: A Day-by-Day Itinerary

Three unhurried days that pair one major palace or museum each morning with coffee houses, markets and evening music.

The biggest mistake in Vienna is stacking three palaces into a single day. This itinerary limits you to one major ticketed palace complex in the morning and one art museum or historic room in the afternoon, leaving proper time for a coffee house and an evening performance. Book timed tickets for Schönbrunn and the Upper Belvedere before you travel.

Day 1: The Innere Stadt, the Hofburg and the Opera

  • 8:30: start at St Stephen's Cathedral before tour groups fill the nave; climb the South Tower or take the North Tower lift, then walk the quiet courtyards of the Heiligenkreuzerhof and Jesuitenkirche.
  • 10:00: if you want a standing-room ticket for tonight's State Opera, book it online at 10am sharp.
  • 10:30: morning coffee and strudel at Café Diglas, Café Hawelka or Café Central, then walk through Freyung and Judenplatz to Michaelerplatz.
  • 12:00: check whether Spanish Riding School morning exercise is running, or step straight into the Hofburg for either the Sisi Museum & Imperial Apartments or the Imperial Treasury, followed by the 30-minute visit to the National Library State Hall (Prunksaal) on Josefsplatz.
  • 15:30: stroll through the Burggarten and Volksgarten rose beds onto the Ringstrasse past the Parliament and Rathaus.
  • Evening: an early Tafelspitz or Schnitzel dinner, then the State Opera or a concert at the Musikverein, finishing with a sausage at the Albertina Würstelstand.

Day 2: Schönbrunn, the Belvedere and a Hillside Wine Tavern

  • 8:15: take U-Bahn line U4 to Schönbrunn. Walk straight through the gardens and up to the Gloriette for the morning view back over the city, then descend for an early timed Grand Tour or Imperial Tour of the palace rooms.
  • 12:30: take U4 back to Kettenbrückengasse and walk through the Naschmarkt for lunch, admiring Otto Wagner's Majolikahaus facades and the gold-leaf dome of the Secession building at the eastern end.
  • 14:30: tram D to Schloss Belvedere for your timed slot at the Upper Belvedere to see Klimt's The Kiss and Schiele, then walk downhill through the Baroque gardens.
  • 17:30: stay on tram D all the way north to the terminus at Nussdorf (or bus 38A to Grinzing) for an evening of Gemischter Satz white wine and buffet plates at a Heuriger wine tavern.

Day 3: Masterpieces, Neubau and the Prater

  • 10:00: spend two hours in the Kunsthistorisches Museum (the Bruegel room on the first floor and the Kunstkammer below), with a coffee under the central dome.
  • 12:30: cross the road into the MuseumsQuartier and walk through the Biedermeier lanes of Spittelberg into Neubau for lunch and independent shops, stopping at Café Sperl in the 6th district.
  • 15:00: return to the Leopold Museum for Egon Schiele and the view from its roof terrace, OR head across the Donaukanal to the Prater for a ride on the 1897 Riesenrad Giant Ferris Wheel, a walk down the chestnut Hauptallee and roast pork knuckle in the Schweizerhaus beer garden.

With a fourth or fifth day: take a one-hour morning train west to Melk for the Baroque abbey and a boat or bike ride down the Wachau Valley to Dürnstein and Krems, or hop an hour east to Bratislava; full logistics are in our day trips guide.
