Lummelunda Cave and Fårö Island: Sea Stacks, Beaches and Bergman's Gotland

Plan a full-day excursion north from Visby to Lummelunda karst cave and Fårö Island to see the limestone sea stacks (raukar) of Langhammars and Digerhuvud.

While medieval Visby anchors the island's west coast, northern Gotland and the adjoining island of Fårö display some of the Baltic region's most striking limestone geology. Following Road 149 and Road 148 north from Visby makes an ideal full-day road or bus trip combining underground karst caverns, wave-sculpted sea stack fields (raukar), white sand beaches, and the landscapes where filmmaker Ingmar Bergman lived and worked.

Lummelunda Cave (Lummelundagrottan)

Situated 13 kilometres north of Visby at Lummelunds bruk along Road 149, Lummelunda Cave is one of Sweden's longest known karst cave systems, with roughly 4.5 kilometres of mapped subterranean passages carved by an underground stream through 400-million-year-old Silurian limestone. Although Carl Linnaeus noted the stream emerging from the cliff in 1741, the inner cave halls remained unknown until three teenage schoolboys from Visby (Lars Olsson, Örjan Håkansson, and Percy Nilsson, remembered as 'The Three Boys') squeezed through narrow water-filled siphons between 1948 and 1955 to discover the King's Hall and the Chapel. In 1959 a 60-metre visitor tunnel was blasted into the dry outer chambers, allowing guided tours past stalactites, drapery formations, and marine fossils.

Crossing the Fårösund Ferry to Fårö's Sea Stack Fields (Raukar)

Continuing northeast past Slite (site of the Spillings Hoard discovery) brings you to Fårösund, 56 kilometres from Visby, where a free 6-minute Trafikverket car ferry crosses the 1.5-kilometre strait to Fårö (109.09 square kilometres, population 495). Along Fårö's northwestern shore, ancient coral reef limestone withstood Ice Age and Baltic wave erosion to leave pillars called raukar. At Gamle Hamn stands the arched sea stack known as Kaffepannan (the Coffee Kettle) or Hunden (the Dog); northward stretches Digerhuvud, Sweden's largest sea stack field spanning 3.5 kilometres of shingle coast with hundreds of pillars, followed by the towering 8-to-10-metre monoliths of Langhammars on the northern peninsula.

Sudersand Beach, Fårö Lighthouse and Ingmar Bergman's Fårö

On Fårö's eastern bay curves the shallow white quartz-sand beach of Sudersand, leading east to the 30-metre stone tower of Fårö Lighthouse (Fårö fyr), lit in 1847. Swedish director Ingmar Bergman first visited Fårö in April 1960 while scouting locations for Through a Glass Darkly, subsequently filming Persona (1966), Shame (1968), The Passion of Anna (1969), and Scenes from a Marriage (1973) on the island; he lived at Hammars until his death on 30 July 2007 and is buried beside Fårö Church.

Planning the Northern Gotland Loop

Allow 7 to 8 hours by car from Visby to visit Lummelunda Cave in the morning, cross at Fårösund around midday, and explore Gamle Hamn, Digerhuvud, Langhammars, and Fårö Church before returning.
