Things to Do in Visby: Walled Lanes, Ruins and Baltic Cliffs

Explore the top things to do in Visby, from walking the 3.44 km medieval city wall and vaulted church ruins to viewing the Spillings Viking silver hoard.

Visby packs eight centuries of Baltic maritime history into a walkable medieval core enclosed by limestone fortifications. Arriving by ferry for a weekend or using the town as a base for all of Gotland places the essential sights within a 1.5-kilometre radius between the harbour and the eastern gates, complemented by dramatic coastal cliffs and sea stack fields a short ride north or south.

Walk the 3.44-Kilometre Medieval City Wall and Kruttornet

Start your visit with a circuit of the Visby city wall and towers (Visby ringmur), built in the 12th to 14th centuries to guard the Hanseatic town against both rural Gotland forces and foreign fleets. Of the original 3.6 kilometres, 3.44 kilometres stand intact up to 11 metres high, punctuated by 27 surviving ground towers and 9 saddle towers. Begin at Kruttornet (the Gunpowder Tower) beside Almedalen, erected in 1158 to 1161 as the oldest surviving non-religious building in the Nordic countries, then follow the dry moats of Nordergravar and Östergravar past Norderport (c. 1289), Dalmanstornet, Österport (1286), and Söderport.

Explore Visby Cathedral and the Medieval Church Ruins

At the foot of the Klinten cliff stands Visby Sankta Maria Cathedral, begun around 1190 by German merchant crews, consecrated on 27 July 1225 by Bishop Bengt of Linköping, and elevated to cathedral of the Diocese of Visby in 1572. It is the only medieval church inside the town still under roof and in parish use. Across the surrounding lanes rise the limestone shells of Franciscan Sankta Karin (founded 1233) on Stora torget, Dominican Sankt Nicolai (begun 1215 to 1220), the twin sister ruins of Sankt Lars and Drotten, Sankt Clemens, and the octagonal two-storey hospital church of Helge And.

See the Spillings Hoard and Viking Picture Stones at Fornsalen

On Strandgatan, step inside Gotlands Museum (Fornsalen), founded in 1875 by Pehr Arvid Säve. Its Picture Stone Hall displays carved 5th to 11th century limestone monuments showing Viking longships and Norse myth, while the Treasury holds the Spillings Hoard, discovered on 16 July 1999 in northern Gotland with 67 kilograms of Viking silver (including 14,295 coins) and 20 kilograms of bronze. Upstairs, chainmail coifs and armour excavated from the mass graves of the 27 July 1361 Battle of Visby bring medieval warfare into sharp focus.

Stroll DBW's Botanical Garden, Strandpromenaden and Högklint

In the northwestern corner of the walled town, DBW's Botanical Garden (founded in 1855 by the society De Badande Vännerna) shelters figs, walnuts, magnolias, and the ivy-clad ruin of Sankt Olof behind the seaside wall. Pass through the arched Kärleksporten gate onto Strandpromenaden and Kallis, or cycle 7 kilometres southwest to the 48-metre vertical limestone sea cliff of Högklint for sweeping views back toward Visby's towers.
