Uetliberg Mountain: S10 Railway, Uto Kulm & Panorama Ridge Trails
How to visit Zurich's 870-metre local mountain by S10 train, climb the Uto Kulm lookout tower, and hike the Albis ridge trail to Felsenegg.
Rising to 870 metres (2,850 feet) above sea level at the northernmost tip of the Albis mountain chain, the Uetliberg (also spelled Üetliberg and known in literary tradition since Friedrich Gottlieb Klopstock's 1750 ode as Uto) is Zurich's Hausberg (home mountain). Straddling the border between the city of Zurich and the municipalities of Stallikon and Uitikon, its summit, Uto Kulm (located in Stallikon), commands an unobstructed view across the city rooftops, the wooded Zürichberg, Lake Zurich, and the Alpine chain. Because the entire ridge is closed to private motor traffic, its beech forests and crest trails serve as the primary outdoor recreation area for residents and visitors alike.

Uto Kulm Summit, Lookout Tower, and Celtic History
Long before hikers climbed its trails, the Uetliberg summit plateau sheltered a Bronze Age refuge fort and a Celtic La Tène oppidum; archaeologists uncovered defensive ramparts, the Sonnenbühl princely burial mound, and a fragment of an Attic black-figure bowl dating to around 500 BC. In the Middle Ages, the ridge held six castles, including Uetliburg (documented in the early thirteenth century), and from 1644 to 1812 the peak served as a signal watchpost (Hochwacht) in Zurich's defensive warning network before a mountaintop inn opened in 1815.
Today the car-free summit plaza features the Hotel Uto Kulm and its panoramic sun terraces alongside two landmarks both rebuilt in 1990: a steel triangular look-out tower open to visitors and the freestanding 186-metre (610-foot) Uetliberg television tower. Climbing the open lattice steps of the observation platform elevates you high above the surrounding treetops for a full circular view stretching from the Black Forest and the Jura hills in the north to the Bernese, Central Swiss, and Glarus Alps in the south. Orientation plaques along the railing identify individual distant peaks across the horizon, while shaded benches and terrace tables below the tower provide a spot for coffee or lunch overlooking the Limmat valley.

Riding the Uetlibergbahn (Line S10)
Opened in 1875 from Selnau, electrified in 1923, extended through an underground tunnel to Zürich Hauptbahnhof in 1990, and converted to 15 kV AC in August 2022, the Uetlibergbahn is operated by the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU) as Line S10 of the Zurich S-Bahn. With a maximum gradient of 7.9 percent, it is the steepest standard-gauge adhesion railway in Europe. Key travel facts:
- Departure Platform: Trains depart from subsurface tracks 21 and 22 (Zürich HB SZU) beneath the main station every half-hour, passing through Selnau, Giesshübel, and Triemli before reaching the upper station in 20 minutes.
- Summit Walk: Uetliberg railway station sits at 812 metres above sea level (68 metres below and about 800 metres from the Uto Kulm summit); a broad, tree-lined footpath illuminated by lanterns after dark leads gently uphill from the platform to the viewpoint in ten minutes.
- Ticketing: Note that while the lower city stops lie in ZVV Zone 110, the upper Uetliberg section crosses into the adjacent ZVV fare zone, so purchase an extension or multi-zone ZVV ticket before boarding.
As the red-and-white S10 carriages climb through the residential gardens of Friesenberg and enter the steep wooded slopes above Triemli, sit on the left side of the train (when travelling uphill) for glimpses back across the city rooftops and the railway tracks fanning out from the central station.

Ridge Hike to Felsenegg and Forest Footpaths
From Uto Kulm, a well-graded panoramic crest trail follows the Albis ridge southward to the Felsenegg vantage point, accompanied by scale models of the sun and planets along the educational Planet Trail (Planetenweg), where each metre walked corresponds to one million kilometres in space. Because the path stays mostly level along the high wooded crest, it suits walkers in ordinary sturdy footwear and opens onto repeated clearings overlooking Lake Zurich on the left and the Reppisch valley on the right. At Felsenegg, the Adliswil-Felsenegg aerial cable car (the sole public cableway in the canton, covered by ZVV zone tickets) descends steeply to Adliswil, where a short signposted walk connects to the S4 S-Bahn train back toward the Altstadt.
Energetic hikers who prefer to climb or descend on foot can also use the steeper forest trails linking the summit directly to Albisgüetli, Triemli, or Uitikon Waldegg, including the shaded Denzlerweg path through deep beech and fir woods, while cyclists have access to the dedicated Biketrail Triemli downhill mountain-bike course. Along the woodland paths, public firepits stocked with chopped firewood and drinking fountains invite picnickers to pause in shaded clearings. In autumn and winter, when persistent low stratus fog (Hochnebel) blankets the city streets, riding the S10 up to Uto Kulm frequently carries you above the grey cloud sea into bright mountain sunshine, and after heavy winter snowfalls the footpath down toward Triemli converts into a popular toboggan run. When you visit for a brisk morning ridge hike to Felsenegg or a late-afternoon sunset view over the lake and central spires, the Uetliberg offers an effortless escape into alpine forest scenery within minutes of downtown. Check the summit webcam displayed at the lower railway platforms before boarding on overcast days to see whether Uto Kulm stands above the valley mist, and bring a windproof layer for the elevated viewing tower even in warm weather.
Because the S10 railway links the underground platforms of the main station directly to the upper forest below Uto Kulm, an excursion to the Uetliberg requires no special mountain gear or advance reservations. You can wait for a clear break in the weather, hop on the next half-hourly train from downtown, and stand on the summit observation tower less than an hour later. Combining the ascent on the Uetlibergbahn with the gentle southward ridge walk along the Planet Trail to the Felsenegg cable car creates a varied circular outing that showcases woodland paths, rural valleys, lake views, and high Alpine peaks in a single morning or afternoon.
Sturdy walking shoes, a refillable water bottle for the trailside fountains, and a fully charged camera are all you need to enjoy the wooded crest between Uto Kulm and Felsenegg in any season of the year.
