Day Trips from Agra: National Chambal River Safari, Bateshwar Temples & Bharatpur
Plan wildlife and heritage day trips from Agra: National Chambal Sanctuary boat safari, Bateshwar's 101 Shiva temples, and Keoladeo National Park.
Within a 55 to 85 km radius of Agra, the Yamuna and Chambal river basins shelter two premier wildlife sanctuaries and a historic riverside temple complex. Driving south-east through Bah tehsil brings you to the National Chambal Sanctuary near the crescent ghats of Bateshwar. The sanctuary protects the critically endangered Gharial crocodile (Gavialis gangeticus) and the Gangetic river dolphin. Driving west along NH-21 past Fatehpur Sikri leads to Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur (UNESCO Reference 340), where 29 square kilometres of wetlands host over 370 bird species. Below, we compare these three excursions by distance, cost, seasonal wildlife highlights, and step-by-step logistics.
| Day Trip from Agra | Distance & Drive Time | Key Wildlife / Heritage Highlight | Typical Entry & Safari Cost (Nov 2026) | Best Months |
|---|---|---|---|---|

National Chambal Sanctuary: Gharials, Gangetic Dolphins, and Badland Ravines
Established in 1979 along a 425-kilometre stretch of the Chambal River where Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan meet, the National Chambal Sanctuary remains remarkably clean. Deep clay-and-sandstone badland ravines (beehad) 15 to 40 metres high flank the river, preventing heavy industry from polluting its banks.
- How the River Boat Safari Works from Agra. Boats and transfers depart Agra around 06:30 via Fatehabad and Bah to reach the UP Forest Department boat jetty at Nandgawan (80 km south-east, 1 hour 45 minutes by car). Here, calm motorboats operated with trained naturalists glide slowly along the sandbars for a 90-to-120-minute river safari. When the boat approaches a sandbank, the helmsman cuts the engine so you can drift silently within photographing distance without disturbing basking reptiles or shorebirds.
- What You Will Spot on the Sandbanks. Unlike the muddy Yamuna in urban Agra, the Chambal runs emerald-green and clear. On sunny mornings between October and March, you can spot fish-eating Gharials along the sandbars. Adult males reach 5 metres and carry a bulbous nasal pot (ghara) on their narrow snouts, basking near broad-snouted Mugger crocodiles. Watch the deeper river channels for the surfacing fin of the Gangetic river dolphin (Platanista gangetica) and eight species of freshwater turtles, including the red-crowned roofed turtle.
- Birdlife Highlight: The Indian Skimmer. For birdwatchers, the Chambal sandbars are a key breeding habitat of the rare Indian skimmer (Rynchops albicollis), which skims the river surface with its bright orange lower bill. You will also see black-bellied terns, bar-headed geese, ruddy shelducks, Pallas's fish eagles, and laggar falcons along the cliffs.
- Approximate Costs (as of November 2026). Booking a private UP Forest Department motorboat safari at Nandgawan costs roughly INR 3,500 to INR 5,500 per boat (~USD 41 to USD 65 as of November 2026). That tariff includes forest entry permits for up to six passengers. A full-day round-trip AC taxi from Agra covering both Chambal and Bateshwar costs roughly INR 3,200 to INR 4,200 (~USD 38 to USD 50).

Bateshwar: The Crescent Ghat of 101 Shiva Temples and Shauripur
Located 18 to 20 km north of the Chambal jetty, the village of Bateshwar sits where the Yamuna River curves in a wide crescent bend. Along this embankment, Raja Badan Singh Bhadauria and successive Rajput rulers of Bhadawar erected a continuous whitewashed chain of 101 Shiva temples in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries to honour Lord Shiva as Bateshwarnath.
- Walking the Ghats and Inspecting Interior Frescoes. Although seasonal Yamuna floods have eroded several outer shrines over the centuries, more than forty domed and spire-topped (shikhara) white temples still stand shoulder to shoulder above the stepped bathing ghats. Step inside the main Bateshwarnath Temple and the adjoining riverside shrines to inspect intricate floral and mythological ceiling frescoes painted in natural vegetable and mineral pigments.
- The Annual Bateshwar Fair (Kartik Mela) & Shauripur Jain Complex. Every autumn around the full moon of Kartik Purnima (late October or November), Bateshwar hosts one of North India's oldest rural livestock and pilgrimage fairs along the dry riverbeds. Just 3 km west of the Shiva ghats lies Shauripur, revered in Jainism as the birthplace of the 22nd Tirthankara, Lord Neminatha, featuring calm Digambara and Shvetambara temples overlooking the Yamuna ravines.

Keoladeo National Park (Bharatpur): UNESCO Wetland by Cycle-Rickshaw
To combine Fatehpur Sikri with wetland birding, drive 22 km west of Sikri (56 km west of Agra on NH-21) to Keoladeo Ghana National Park in Bharatpur. Created in the eighteenth century by Maharaja Suraj Mal at the confluence of the Gambhir and Banganga rivers, the 29-square-kilometre sanctuary bans petrol vehicles along its tree-lined dykes.
- Exploring by Cycle-Rickshaw or Bicycle. From the main gate, visitors can rent a geared bicycle for roughly INR 100 to INR 150 per day as of November 2026. You can also hire a park-trained cycle-rickshaw puller (roughly INR 200 to INR 250 per hour) along the 11-kilometre causeway. Many of Bharatpur's rickshaw drivers have spent decades guiding ornithologists and can spot camouflaged scops owls, Indian rock pythons sunning outside burrows, and nightjars within seconds.
- Winter Birding Highlights (November to February). In winter, the shallow marshes teem with thousands of nesting painted storks, openbill storks, black-necked storks, spoonbills, darters, and herons. Wet meadows also shelter resident sarus cranes, sambar deer, nilgai antelope, golden jackals, and spotted deer.
Planning your excursion and Traveller tips
Use these field logistics to pick the right day trip for your schedule.
- Quick Decision Block (Chambal Loop: 170 km · Bharatpur Loop: 120 km · Best Season: Oct to March). Pair morning Fatehpur Sikri (08:00 to 10:30) with afternoon Keoladeo National Park (11:30 to 16:30) in the west, or combine a morning Chambal River Safari (08:30 to 11:00) with Bateshwar Ghats (11:30 to 13:00) in the south-east.
- Carry Passport ID for Sanctuary Permits. Both sanctuary ticket offices require foreign visitors to show a passport and Indian visitors to carry government photo ID. Pair your wildlife excursion with our Best Time to Visit Agra Guide.
- Stopping at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre (Mathura Road, NH-19). Another rewarding wildlife stop lies 32 kilometres north-west of Agra along NH-19 near Farah at the Wildlife SOS Elephant Conservation and Care Centre. Nearby sits the Bear Rescue Facility inside the Sur Sarovar Bird Sanctuary at Keetham Lake. Founded in 1995, this ethical rehabilitation sanctuary cares for rescued working elephants in chain-free enclosures with zero riding or tricks. Two-hour educational visits must be pre-booked by email with Wildlife SOS and carry a conservation donation of roughly INR 1,500 to INR 2,500 per person as of November 2026.
- Visiting Ater Fort Above the Chambal Ravines. On a full-day Chambal excursion, ask your boatman to point out the seventeenth-century ramparts of Ater Fort across the river. Bhadauria Rajput king Maha Singh built the fortress between 1644 and 1668 atop the deep clay ravines.
- What to Pack for Chambal & Bharatpur Day Trips. Morning boat rides on the open Chambal River in December and January feel brisk at 9°C to 12°C, so wear a windproof fleece or light down jacket, muted earth-toned clothing, and closed walking shoes. Bring 8x42 binoculars, a 200mm to 400mm telephoto lens for basking gharials, and bottled water. Carry INR 4,000 to INR 6,000 in cash for forest permits and rickshaw naturalists, and link your morning sanctuary trip with our step-by-step Agra 3-Day Itinerary and Agra Transport Guide for morning express train and highway timings.
