Agra

India, Asia

Home to three UNESCO World Heritage Sites along a single bend of the Yamuna River, Agra was the imperial capital of the Mughal Empire under Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan, preserving the ivory-white marble Taj Mahal, the red sandstone ramparts of Agra Fort, and theroyal citadel of Fatehpur Sikri.

Quick decisions

How many days?

Spend at least 2 to 3 full days: Day 1 for sunrise at the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort, Day 2 for the East Bank (Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh) plus Sikandra, and Day 3 for Fatehpur Sikri and Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary.

Where should I stay?

Base yourself along the Taj East Gate Road in Tajganj so you can walk straight to the East Gate ticket queue at 05:30 dawn without relying on morning auto-rickshaws.

Do I need a car?

No: ride the 100-minute Gatimaan Express or Vande Bharat Express from New Delhi to Agra Cantt Station, use battery golf carts inside the Taj Eco-Zone, and hire pre-paid taxis or Ola/Uber rides across town.

Best for

Seventeenth-century Mughal marble architecture, parchin kari (pietra dura) semi-precious stone inlay, red sandstone imperial forts, Mughlai kebabs, and birdwatching day trips.

Before you go

Remember that the Taj Mahal is strictly closed every Friday for prayers. Book Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) e-tickets online in advance (1,100 INR + 200 INR mausoleum add-on for foreign visitors as of November 2026) and never bring power banks, tripods, drones, food, or chargers to the security gates.

Getting around

Arrive at Agra Cantt Railway Station (AGC), use the Agra Metro corridor linking Taj East Gate to Jama Masjid, and book Uber or Ola auto-rickshaws to avoid street fare haggling.

Continue your trip

Continue west via Fatehpur Sikri and Bharatpur to Jaipur on India's Golden Triangle, ride the 100-minute express train north to New Delhi, or take the Vande Bharat train east to Varanasi.

Overview

Cradled by a sweeping horseshoe bend of the sacred Yamuna River in western Uttar Pradesh, 210 kilometres (130 miles) south of New Delhi, Agra served from 1526 to 1648 as the political and artistic capital of the Mughal Empire (known to court chroniclers as Akbarabad). No other city in South Asia contains three separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites within a forty-kilometre radius: the ivory-white Makrana marble Taj Mahal (inscribed in 1983, Reference 252), the 2.5-kilometre red sandstone ramparts of Agra Fort (inscribed in 1983, Reference 251), and Emperor Akbar's sixteenth-century ceremonial city of Fatehpur Sikri (inscribed in 1986, Reference 255).

Beyond its headline triad, Agra preserves the complete evolutionary arc of Indo-Islamic architecture along both banks of the Yamuna. On the quieter eastern bank stand the jewel-box marble Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah ("Baby Taj", completed in 1628), the glazed-tile Chini Ka Rauza, and the symmetrical charbagh moonlight gardens of Mehtab Bagh looking directly across the river at the northern facade of the Taj Mahal. To the northwest at Sikandra rises the five-tiered sandstone-and-marble mausoleum of Emperor Akbar the Great, while the narrow lanes of Kinari Bazaar and Gokulpura sustain the families of master artisans who still carve semi-precious carnelian, lapis lazuli, and malachite into marble.

Getting there

Ride India's fastest daytime trains into Agra Cantt Railway Station (AGC) from New Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi stations on the Gatimaan Express (100 minutes, departing 08:10) or the Vande Bharat Express (around 95 to 105 minutes), drive 3 to 3.5 hours south from Delhi along the six-lane Yamuna Expressway (165 km), or ride the newly opened Agra Metro Priority Corridor directly between Taj East Gate, Taj Mahal, and Agra Fort stations.

Where to stay

Stay within walking distance of the sunrise turnstiles along Taj East Gate Road and Shilpgram in Tajganj (home to The Oberoi Amarvilas, Taj Hotel & Convention Centre, and boutique rooftop inns), choose the resort corridor of Fatehabad Road for international five-star hotels with large pools, or book heritage bungalows in the leafy colonial Cantonment and Mall Road district near Agra Cantt Station.

Things to do

Enter the Taj Mahal through the East Gate 30 minutes before sunrise, explore the marble palaces and octagonal Musamman Burj tower inside Agra Fort, cross the Yamuna to inspect the delicate lattice screens of the Baby Taj and watch sunset from Mehtab Bagh, admire the deer park at Akbar's Tomb in Sikandra, and take a day trip west to Fatehpur Sikri and the Keoladeo Bird Sanctuary at Bharatpur.

Food and drink

Start your morning with crispy spiced lentil bedai flatbreads, pumpkin sabzi, and hot saffron jalebi in our Agra food guide, feast on slow-cooked Mughlai galouti kebabs, murgh musallam, and nihari near Jama Masjid, and bring home a box of translucent ash-gourd Agra petha and spicy dalmoth lentil mix from Panchhi Petha.

Culture

When Fifth Mughal Emperor Shahab-ud-din Muhammad Khurram (Shah Jahan) commissioned Chief Architect Ustad Ahmad Lahori in 1632 to build a celestial vision of paradise on earth for his late Empress Mumtaz Mahal, he fused Timurid Persian symmetry, Hindu lotus and kalash finials, and Italian-inspired parchin kari stone inlay into a single architectural language that still defines Agra's living craft guilds four centuries later.
