Agra Orientation: Taj Mahal Gate Rules, Friday Closures, ASI Cashless QR Tickets & Avoiding Tout Traps
Master Agra's Yamuna River geography, East vs West Gate Taj Mahal entry, Friday closure rules, 2026 ASI ticket tiers, Eco-Zone golf carts, and how to avoid marble-shop traps.
Cradled by a wide bend of the Yamuna River in Uttar Pradesh, Agra lies 210 kilometres south of New Delhi. Between 1526 and 1648, it served as the imperial seat of the Mughal Empire under Akbar, Jahangir, and Shah Jahan. Today the city holds three separate UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Taj Mahal (Reference 252), Agra Fort (Reference 251), and Fatehpur Sikri (Reference 255). Yet first-time travellers routinely lose their precious sunrise window to avoidable mistakes at the Taj Eco-Zone security barriers. Arriving on a Friday when the Taj Mahal is closed or carrying prohibited power banks into the queue can derail your morning. Tuk-tuk drivers may also try to steer you into a fake soapstone showroom. Below is our complete 2026 operational guide to Agra's layout, gates, tickets, and street smarts.
| Zone | Core Monuments | Transit & Gate Rule | Best Time of Day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Tajganj & Taj Eco-Zone (South Bank) | Taj Mahal (East, West & South Gates), Shilpgram, Taj Nature Walk | Petrol cars stop 500 to 900 m from gates. Walk or take the 20 INR battery golf cart | 30 mins before sunrise at East Gate (closed every Friday) |
| 2. West Bank Imperial Belt & Old City | Agra Fort (Amar Singh Gate), Jama Masjid, Kinari Bazaar, Mankameshwar Temple | 3 km northwest of Taj Mahal. Linked by Agra Metro and Yamuna Kinara Road | 09:00 to 11:30 after your Taj Mahal sunrise visit |
| 3. East Bank of the Yamuna (Trans-Yamuna) | Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), Chini Ka Rauza, Mehtab Bagh Gardens | 15 min taxi across Ambedkar Bridge from Agra Fort | 15:00 at Baby Taj, then 16:45 sunset at Mehtab Bagh |
| 4. Outer Mughal Corridor (North & West) | Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra (10 km north) and Fatehpur Sikri (37 km west) | 25 min taxi to Sikandra. 1 hr drive west to Fatehpur Sikri | Morning excursion on Day 2 or Day 3 |
Geography of Agra: How the Yamuna River bend links the Mughal monuments
Unlike medieval European cities built around a single central square, Mughal Agra was designed as a riverfront garden city along the western and southern curve of the Yamuna River. Understanding how the four main districts relate to the river makes planning your 3-day Agra itinerary effortless.
- Tajganj and the Taj Trapezium Eco-Zone (South-East). Surrounding the southern walls of the Taj Mahal sits the historic neighbourhood of Tajganj, flanked by the East Gate Road (Shilpgram) and Fatehabad Road hotel corridors. To protect the white Makrana marble from vehicle exhaust yellowing, Indian Supreme Court rules enforce a strict 500-metre pollution-free buffer zone around the Taj Mahal. All petrol and diesel cars must park at the Shilpgram (East) or Amrood Ka Teela (West) car parks, where battery-powered golf carts and electric buses shuttle visitors to the gates.
- Agra Fort, Kinari Bazaar, and the Cantonment (West & South-West). Exactly 2.5 kilometres upstream along the western bank of the Yamuna rises the red sandstone crescent of Agra Fort. Directly behind the fort's Delhi Gate sits the seventeenth-century Jama Masjid and the busy wholesale lanes of Kinari Bazaar. Four kilometres southwest lies the leafy British-era Agra Cantonment, home to Agra Cantt Railway Station.
- The East Bank (Trans-Yamuna: Baby Taj and Mehtab Bagh). Directly across the river from Agra Fort and the Taj Mahal sits the Tomb of Itimad-ud-Daulah ("Baby Taj"), the empire's earliest intact marble mausoleum. Nearby stand the Persian-tiled Chini Ka Rauza and the riverside garden of Mehtab Bagh, facing the northern wall of the Taj Mahal.

Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) 2026 ticket prices and Friday rules
Every major Mughal monument in Agra is managed by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) together with the Agra Development Authority (ADA), which levies a combined heritage toll ("Pathkar") included in the official ticket. Keep three non-negotiable ticketing rules in mind as of November 2026.
- The Taj Mahal Is Strictly Closed Every Friday. The Taj Mahal closes to all tourists every Friday year-round, opening only in the afternoon for local Muslim residents attending Friday (Jummah) prayers at the western mosque. If your schedule puts you in Agra on a Friday, spend Friday morning at Agra Fort, Baby Taj, and Fatehpur Sikri. All three remain open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset, and you can view the Taj Mahal from Mehtab Bagh at dusk.
- 2026 Foreigner vs Domestic ASI Entry Fees (Subject to Official Change). As of November 2026, official foreign adult entry fees (combining ASI fee and ADA toll, with a small 50 INR discount when booked online via asi.payumoney.com or tajmahal.gov.in) are:
- Taj Mahal. 1,100 INR base ticket covering the gardens, mosque, Jawab, and lower marble plinth. Add the optional 200 INR Mausoleum Add-On Ticket (1,300 INR total) to enter the central domed chamber housing the cenotaphs of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. Foreign tickets include a complimentary 500 ml bottle of water, disposable cloth shoe covers, and the battery golf cart from Shilpgram. Citizens of SAARC and BIMSTEC nations pay 540 INR (plus 200 INR for the mausoleum), while Indian citizens pay 50 INR (plus 200 INR). Children under 15 of all nationalities enter free.
- Agra Fort. Around 650 INR for foreign visitors (600 INR online) and 50 INR for Indian citizens.
- Fatehpur Sikri. Around 610 INR for foreign visitors and 50 INR for Indian citizens.
- Itimad-ud-Daulah (Baby Taj), Akbar's Tomb at Sikandra, and Mehtab Bagh. Around 300 to 310 INR each for foreign visitors and 25 to 30 INR for Indian citizens.
- Same-Day Monument Discount Rule. Showing a same-day Taj Mahal ticket at the counter grants a small ADA toll rebate at Agra Fort, Sikandra, and Itimad-ud-Daulah. However, booking online QR tickets in advance is far faster and lets you skip the ticket-office queues entirely.
How to defeat Agra's four classic tout and shopping traps
While Agra's monuments are patrolled by Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officers and Tourist Police, street touts outside the gates run four well-rehearsed schemes.
- The "Government Emporium" Soapstone vs Real Makrana Marble Scam. Auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers earn commissions of 30 to 50 percent for bringing tourists into multi-storey "Marble Cottage Industries" along Fatehabad Road. Salesmen shine a flashlight through a white plate to claim it is translucent Makrana marble inlaid with real gems. In reality, many pack soft white alabaster or soapstone (sang-e-jarrah) filled with coloured plastic resin that yellows and scratches within months. Read our Agra marble inlay and crafts guide to learn the fingernail and acid tests before buying anything.
- Unofficial "Skip-the-Line Guide" Badge Flashers at Shilpgram. Men waiting along the 600-metre walk between the Shilpgram car park and the Taj East Gate flash laminated plastic cards claiming to be "mandatory government security guides" or promising a secret VIP gate. Only guides carrying an official Ministry of Tourism (Government of India) photo license or UP Tourism license are permitted to guide inside ASI monuments. Never hire anyone approaching you in the street. Book through your hotel or the official ASI audio guide app.
- The Fatehpur Sikri Jama Masjid "Chadar & Flower Offering" Pressure Trap. Inside the courtyard of Fatehpur Sikri's Jama Masjid, unofficial attendants often hand visitors a rose basket or velvet cloth (chadar) as a blessing. Once inside the shrine door, they demand 2,000 to 5,000 INR as a mandatory donation. Politely keep your hands folded in a namaste gesture and decline any cloth or flowers before entering.
- Shoe-Locker Overcharging Outside Mosque Gates. At the Taj Mahal, your 1,300 INR foreign ticket already includes free disposable cloth shoe covers inside the High Value Ticket envelope picked up at Shilpgram. You do not need to leave your shoes with third-party street vendors outside the gate who demand 100 INR per pair.

Traveller tips
Always book your Taj Mahal sunrise ticket online at asi.payumoney.com the afternoon before your visit and save the PDF QR code offline on your phone. Remember that under ASI rules introduced in recent years, each Taj Mahal ticket carries a strict 3-hour time limit inside the complex from the moment your QR code is scanned at the entry turnstile. Exceeding three hours triggers an exit surcharge equivalent to a new ticket. Pair this orientation with our prohibited items and dress guide and Tajganj hotel guide.
