Where to Stay in Antalya: A Neighbourhood Guide

Short answer: for a first visit that mixes sightseeing and the sea, stay in Kaleiçi. For a beach holiday with children, Konyaaltı. For an all-inclusive week, Lara or Belek. The details below explain the trade-offs.

Kaleiçi

The old town is full of small hotels in restored Ottoman houses, often with a courtyard, a lemon tree and a small pool. You can walk to Hadrian's Gate, the harbour and dozens of restaurants, and the tram is just outside the walls. The downsides are real, though. Many lanes are closed to cars, so you may be carrying your bags the last stretch. Rooms in old houses can be small, and some streets near the harbour have bars that play music late. Ask for a quiet room when you book.

Konyaaltı

A newer district along the western beach, mostly apartment blocks and mid-range hotels facing the sea. Families like it for the long promenade, the parks and the easy beach access. It's a 15 to 20 minute bus or tram ride from Kaleiçi, or a long walk along the seafront. Evenings are relaxed rather than lively.

Lara

East of the city, close to the airport. This is resort country, with big all-inclusive hotels on the sand, some of them built in extravagant themed shapes. Convenient for a short transfer and a sandy beach, less so for exploring the city, which is a taxi ride away.

Belek and Kemer

Both are separate resort towns rather than parts of Antalya. Belek, about 40 minutes east, is known for golf courses and large luxury resorts, and it's closer to Aspendos. Kemer, about an hour south-west, has a marina and a backdrop of forested mountains, and it's the better base for Phaselis, Olympos and the day trips along that coast.

Near the centre

The areas just north of Kaleiçi, around Işıklar Caddesi and Balbey, have ordinary city hotels at lower prices, with the old town ten minutes away on foot. You lose the atmosphere but keep the convenience, and you eat where locals eat.
