How to Get to Granada: AVE Trains, Málaga & Granada Airports & ALSA Buses
Compare high-speed AVE and Avant trains from Madrid, Córdoba, and Seville, direct ALSA coaches from Málaga Airport (AGP), and local Granada transit.
Reaching Granada has become significantly faster since the completion of the high-speed Antequera, Granada standard-gauge rail line, which linked the city directly into Spain's AVE and Avant network together with Madrid, Córdoba, Seville, and Barcelona. At the same time, many international travellers fly into Málaga, Costa del Sol Airport (AGP), located 125 kilometres southwest on the Mediterranean coast. Málaga offers far more direct European flights and express coaches right from its arrivals terminal than Granada's smaller domestic airport. Below, we compare every rail, air, coach, and road approach into Granada with distances, transit times, and dated November 2026 fares. For moving between the station and your hotel, pair this guide with our where to stay in Granada neighbourhood breakdown and our Granada travel guide.
| Origin & Route | Transport Mode | Distance & Travel Time | Approx. Fare (Nov 2026) |

| Córdoba / Seville (Santa Justa) to Granada | Renfe Avant regional high-speed train | 165 km from Córdoba (1 hr 35 min); 250 km from Seville (2 hr 30 min) | ~€25.50 from Córdoba; ~€36.90 from Seville (fixed Avant tariff) |
| Málaga Airport (AGP) or Málaga Bus Station | ALSA direct express coach (from AGP T3 arrivals) | 125 km via A-92; 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours 15 minutes | €13.00 to €16.50 one-way depending on Supra or standard service |
| Granada-Jaén Airport (GRX) to City Centre | ALSA Airport Bus Line 245 or licensed white taxi | 17 km west via A-92; 35 to 45 minutes to Gran Vía / Cathedral | ~€3.00 on Line 245 bus; ~€28.00 to €34.00 by metered taxi |
Arriving by train: Madrid AVE and Seville / Córdoba Avant services
Granada Railway Station (Estación de Ferrocarril de Granada) sits on Avenida de Andaluces, just 1.4 kilometres (an 18-minute flat walk) west of Granada Cathedral and Gran Vía de Colón. Unlike outlying high-speed stations in Segovia or Cuenca, Granada's terminus sits right inside the urban core. A Granada Metro light-rail stop (Estación de Ferrocarril) and a licensed taxi rank wait immediately outside the station doors.
Renfe runs three to four direct AVE high-speed trains daily from Madrid Puerta de Atocha, taking roughly 3 hours 25 minutes via Córdoba. One daily long-distance AVE also connects Barcelona Sants to Granada in about 6 hours 25 minutes. Within Andalusia, Renfe's medium-distance Avant high-speed trains run multiple times daily. They link Granada with Seville Santa Justa (2 hours 30 minutes), Córdoba Central (1 hour 35 minutes), and Málaga María Zambrano (1 hour 15 minutes). Because Avant trains have fixed seat quotas without standing room, book your tickets on renfe.com at least 7 to 14 days ahead, especially for Friday afternoon and Sunday evening departures.

Flying via Málaga Airport (AGP) vs Granada-Jaén Airport (GRX)
Two airports serve visitors heading to Granada, and choosing between them depends on whether you are flying from another Spanish hub or directly from northern Europe or North America:
- Federico García Lorca Granada-Jaén Airport (GRX). Located 17 km west of Granada near Chauchina, GRX handles frequent direct domestic flights from Madrid-Barajas (IB), Barcelona-El Prat (VY), Palma de Mallorca, and the Canary Islands, plus select European routes. Outside the arrivals hall, the ALSA Line 245 airport coach coordinates with incoming flights and heads into central Granada. It stops at La Caleta, Jardines del Triunfo, Gran Vía de Colón (Cathedral), and Puerta Real (~€3.00 by cash or contactless card as of November 2026). Official white city taxis wait outside the terminal and charge a regulated airport tariff of roughly €28.00 to €32.00 on weekdays and €32.00 to €36.00 on evenings, Sundays, and holidays to the historic centre.
- Málaga, Costa del Sol Airport (AGP). Located 125 km southwest, AGP is Andalusia's primary international gateway with over 130 direct routes across Europe, the UK, and North America. You do not need to enter Málaga city centre if you take the coach. ALSA buses depart directly outside Terminal 3 Arrivals every 1 to 2 hours between 07:00 and 22:30, reaching Granada Bus Station in 2 hours (€14.00 to €16.50 as of November 2026). Alternatively, take the C1 Cercanías suburban train 8 minutes from Málaga Airport to Málaga María Zambrano railway station and board a direct 75-minute Avant train to Granada.
Arriving at Granada Bus Station and connecting by Metro or Bus 33
Intercity ALSA coaches from Málaga, Madrid Estación Sur, Seville Plaza de Armas, Córdoba, and Almería all arrive at Granada Bus Station. This terminal (Estación de Autobuses de Granada) sits on Calle Minerva in the northern Almanjáyar district, 3.5 kilometres north of the Cathedral. Do not attempt to walk from the bus station into the historic centre with luggage.
Instead, walk 150 metres from the bus station main doors to the Estación de Autobuses stop of the Granada Metro (Metropolitano de Granada) and ride southbound toward Armilla. Alight at Caleta, Méndez Núñez, or Recogidas (south end of the historic centre) in 10 to 14 minutes (~€1.35 single ticket or ~€0.82 with a Metro card as of November 2026). If your hotel sits along Gran Vía de Colón, beside the Cathedral, or near Puerta Real, board urban Bus Line 33 outside the station. Line 33 runs down Avenida de la Constitución and Gran Vía every 6 to 10 minutes (~€1.60 single cash fare). A metered taxi from the bus station to Plaza Nueva or the lower Albaicín takes 12 minutes and costs roughly €9.00 to €12.00.

Driving the A-92 and A-44 motorways and ZBE parking rules
By road, Granada sits at the junction of the toll-free A-92 highway (linking Seville, Málaga, and Almería) and the A-44 motorway from Madrid and Jaén. Mountain highway approaches remain snow-free year-round along the main A-92 and A-44 corridors, though winter chains are needed if driving up the A-395 to the Sierra Nevada ski station at Pradollano.
Never drive a rental car into Gran Vía de Colón, Reyes Católicos, Carrera del Darro, the Albaicín, or Realejo unless your hotel has pre-registered your license plate number with the municipal mobility office. Automated number-plate cameras enforce both the historic restricted bus lanes and Granada's Zona de Bajas Emisiones (ZBE), issuing €200 fines per camera crossing. Use peripheral underground car parks outside the camera perimeter, such as Parking Puerta Real, Parking Violón beside the Genil River, or Parking San Agustín. You can also drive directly via the Ronda Sur (A-395) ring road tunnel to the official Alhambra car park.
Traveller tips
- Book Málaga Airport last evening ALSA bus in advance. If your flight lands at Málaga Airport (AGP) after 18:00, pre-book your ALSA coach seat via the ALSA app or website. The final evening departures at 20:30 and 22:30 frequently sell out to arriving passengers before the bus reaches the airport stand.
- Ask taxis for the perimeter drop-off in the Albaicín. Licensed Granada taxis are authorised to pass through the Albaicín bollard and camera gates, reaching Plaza Larga, San Nicolás (via Cuesta del Chapiz), and San Cristóbal even where private cars are barred.
- Luggage storage at stations and the Cathedral. Neither Granada Railway Station nor the Bus Station operates manned left-luggage lockers inside the concourse. However, automated 24-hour smart lockers around Gran Vía, Plaza Nueva, and Avenida de Andaluces store suitcases for ~€6.00 to €10.00 per day as of November 2026. Day visitors holding an Alhambra ticket can also store bags free at the Alhambra Access Pavilion and Gate of Wine cloakrooms.
- Connecting to Ronda and Úbeda/Baeza: If your Andalusian route includes Ronda, change trains at Antequera-Santa Ana station (50 minutes from Granada by Avant, followed by a 70-minute Media Distancia train or ALSA bus to Ronda). For Renaissance Úbeda and Baeza in Jaén province, three daily ALSA coaches run north along the A-44 from Granada Bus Station in 1 hour 45 minutes (~€12.50 to €15.00 as of November 2026).
- Riding the LAC and Line 4 urban buses along Gran Vía. In addition to the red C30 to C34 hillside minibuses, high-frequency blue-and-white Line 4 and Line 33 buses run every 4 to 7 minutes down the central bus corridor connecting the Bus Station, Caleta, Gran Vía de Colón, Puerta Real, and Paseo del Violón. You can transfer free within 60 minutes onto the C30 or C32 Alhambra minibus when tapping the same green Credibús card.
