What to Wear in Granada: Footwear for Empedrado Cobbles, Cathedral Dress Code & Packing
Pack the right shoes for Granada's steep empedrado river-stone lanes, layer for 15°C mountain temperature swings, and meet dress codes at the Cathedral and Royal Chapel.
Packing for Granada requires planning around two local conditions that catch many visitors off guard. First are the steep 15% hillsides paved with empedrado granadino river stones, and second is the 15°C daily temperature swing at 738 metres elevation. Even when coastal Málaga is warm enough for shorts and sandals all evening, an October or April sunset at Mirador de San Nicolás quickly turns brisk once the sun drops behind the Vega plain. Use this seasonal packing and dress-code breakdown together with our best time to visit Granada weather calendar and our Granada Cathedral and Royal Chapel guide.
| Setting / Monument | Surface & Microclimate | Dress & Bag Requirement | Recommended Footwear & Gear |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alhambra, Alcazaba & Generalife | 3.5 km of stone steps, gravel paths, and marble thresholds | No strict religious dress code. Backpacks over 40x40 cm must go in free lockers | Cushioned walking trainers with grippy rubber treads. Sun hat and refillable water bottle |
| Albaicín & Sacromonte Hillsides | Steep polished river pebbles (empedrado) and uneven limestone steps | Casual daywear. Windproof outer layer for exposed hilltop miradores at dusk | Flat rubber-soled shoes or trail sneakers. Avoid leather soles, wedges, and stiletto heels |
| Granada Cathedral, Royal Chapel & Mezquita Mayor | Cool stone interiors (16°C to 19°C year-round) | Shoulders and midriffs covered. No beachwear or hats inside active worship spaces | Light cotton scarf or cardigan in your daypack to slip over sleeveless tops at the door |
| Evening Tapas Bars & Cave Flamenco | Standing-room tavern bars and whitewashed chalk caves | Smart-casual local style (dark jeans, linen shirt, dress, or light jacket) | Comfortable city walking shoes. Compact crossbody bag that stays secure at busy bar counters |
Footwear for empedrado granadino and 4-kilometre Alhambra walks
The single most important item in your suitcase for Granada is a pair of broken-in walking shoes with textured rubber soles. Throughout the Albaicín, Realejo, Cuesta de Gomérez, and the Alhambra, streets are paved with empedrado granadino. Craftsmen gather smooth white quartz and dark slate pebbles from the Darro and Genil rivers and set them vertically in mortar to form pomegranates and stars.
Over decades of foot traffic, the tops of these river stones become polished like marble. When descending steep lanes like Cuesta de Alhacaba or Calderería Nueva, hard leather soles, plastic flip-flops, and high heels slide easily on wet stone. A standard visit to the Alhambra, Alcazaba watchtowers, and Generalife gardens covers 3.5 to 5 kilometres on foot and climbs over 300 uneven stone steps, so cushioned trainers or low-profile walking shoes prevent ankle strain.

Dress codes for Granada Cathedral, the Royal Chapel, and Mezquita Mayor
The Alhambra and Generalife operate as secular museum monuments under the Andalusian government. There is no religious dress code for the Nasrid Palaces or Alcazaba, so shorts, sleeveless tops, and sundresses are permitted in summer. However, strictly enforced modesty rules apply at Granada's active religious buildings:
- Granada Cathedral, Royal Chapel (Capilla Real), and Monastery of San Jerónimo. Visitors must cover shoulders and avoid low-cut beach tops, bare midriffs, or very short athletic shorts. Men must remove hats and caps upon passing the ticket turnstile. Carrying a lightweight linen shirt or pashmina scarf in your daypack lets you cover your shoulders in seconds during warm weather.
- Gardens of the Mezquita Mayor (Upper Albaicín). The outdoor viewing terrace beside Mirador de San Nicolás is free to visit. Because it belongs to an active mosque complex, visitors must wear modest attire covering shoulders and knees and maintain quiet behaviour.

Alhambra backpack size limits and seasonal layering
To protect the fragile 14th-century carved stucco walls of the Nasrid Palaces from scrapes, the Patronato strictly bans backpacks or bags larger than 40 cm × 40 cm. Any bag within the permitted size must be worn on your chest (front-carried) rather than on your back while walking through the Nasrid Palaces and Museum of the Alhambra. If your daypack exceeds 40 cm, check it free of charge upon showing your ticket at the Left Luggage cloakrooms (Consigna). Cloakrooms sit at both the main Access Pavilion and beside the Gate of Wine near Puerta de la Justicia. Baby strollers with wheels are also barred inside the Nasrid Palaces. Free baby-carrier backpacks are loaned at the Gate of Wine cloakroom while you leave your stroller stored.
For clothing layers, dress like an onion (vestirse por capas). In spring and autumn, start the morning with a breathable cotton or merino shirt and a light sweater. Add a windproof jacket that you can stow in your bag by 12:30 when the sun warms the courtyards. In winter (December, February), pack a proper insulated coat, scarf, and gloves for early morning palace slots and late-night walks back from tapas bars. In summer (July, August), bring loose linen or cotton shirts, UV sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat, and SPF 50 sunscreen for the unshaded ramparts of the Alcazaba.
Traveller tips
- Tripods and selfie sticks are banned inside the Nasrid Palaces. Hand-held cameras and smartphones (without flash) are welcome throughout the Alhambra, but tripods, monopods, and extendable selfie sticks must be stowed or left at the free cloakroom unless you hold a commercial press permit.
- Evening dress in Granada. Andalucians dress smartly for evening tapas and dinner. Swapping athletic gym shorts and hiking sandals for dark trousers, chinos, or a summer dress blends in naturally at bars along Calle Navas, Plaza de Toros, and Realejo.
- What to pack for Sacromonte cave flamenco and Arab baths (hammams). If you attend an evening zambra in Sacromonte, remember that troglodyte caves stay at a natural 18°C to 20°C year-round. Meanwhile, the walk back down Camino del Sacromonte at 23:00 catches cool mountain air off the Darro valley. If you book a 90-minute thermal circuit at Hammam Al Ándalus Granada on Calle Santa Ana (at the foot of the Alhambra behind Plaza Nueva, Sessions start around €45.00 to €62.00 as of November 2026), pack a one-piece swimsuit or swim trunks. Towels, lockers, shampoo, and flip-flops for the wet marble floors are provided inside the bathhouse, and long hair must be tied up in the thermal pools.
- Sun protection, altitude UV, and winter accessories. At 738 to 850 metres elevation under clear skies, ultraviolet radiation is 10% stronger than at sea level. Whitewashed Albaicín walls and pale marble Alhambra courtyards also reflect bright glare from March through October. Always carry polarized UV400 sunglasses, lip balm with SPF, and a crushable sun hat that will not blow off on the windy Torre de la Vela watchtower. Conversely, between late November and early March, historic stone churches and 14th-century palaces have no indoor heating. Wear warm merino socks inside your walking shoes so cold marble floors in the Royal Chapel and Nasrid Palaces do not chill your feet.
- Where to buy forgotten gear or pharmacy items in central Granada: If your shoe soles prove too slick for the cobbles or you need an extra warm jacket, head to Puerta Real and Calle Recogidas. These flat shopping streets house Zara, Mango, Massimo Dutti, Camper footwear, and the El Corte Inglés department store. Green-cross pharmacies (farmacias) along Gran Vía stock blister plasters (apósitos para ampollas) and sunscreen, with 24-hour duty rotas posted on every door.
- Selecting a front-worn daypack for the Nasrid Palaces. Guards require every visitor to carry permitted bags (under 40 cm × 40 cm) on their chest inside the Nasrid Palaces. Choose a soft canvas tote, a compact 12-litre sling bag, or a light drawstring pack rather than a rigid camera rucksack. This spares you a 15-minute round trip to the Gate of Wine cloakroom before your timed entry slot.
- Rain gear for April and November mountain showers. While summer rain is practically zero in Granada, April and November average six to seven brief rain days when Atlantic fronts hit the Sierra Nevada. A compact folding umbrella or a breathable hooded shell fits easily in your coat pocket and dries quickly before you enter the Cathedral or tapas bars.
- Sunglasses and hat rules inside monuments. Hats and sunglasses are welcome in outdoor courtyards. Remove caps and sun hats when stepping inside Granada Cathedral and the Royal Chapel.
- Umbrella storage at palace entrances. Short folding umbrellas fit inside permitted front-carried daypacks. Long walking-stick umbrellas with metal tips must be checked free at the Alhambra cloakrooms.
- Socks for Arab bathhouse visits. If visiting Hammam Al Ándalus near Plaza Nueva, bring a dry change of socks and underwear for your walk back to the hotel.
- Laundry services in central Granada. Self-service coin laundrettes (lavanderías autoservicio) operate on Calle Elvira, Calle San Juan de Dios, and Calle Molinos in the Realejo (~€5.00 wash and ~€4.00 dry as of November 2026).
