3 Days in Malmö Itinerary: Old Town, Västra Hamnen, Lund & Falsterbo

Follow a verified 3-day Malmö itinerary covering Gamla Staden, Malmöhus Castle, Turning Torso, Ribersborgs kallbadhus, and day trips to Lund and Falsterbo.

Three days in Malmö give you two unhurried days to explore the historic squares, Renaissance moat fortifications, waterfront architecture, and sea saunas of the city itself, followed by a third day riding regional trains to the Romanesque cathedral city of Lund and the white-sand peninsula of Skanör and Falsterbo.

Because the three underground and open-cut stations of the City Tunnel link Gamla Staden, Triangeln, and Hyllie directly with regional rail lines across Skåne, this route requires no car rental and minimal transit time between stops. You can follow the sequence on foot and by bicycle inside the city, using contactless cards or the Skånetrafiken app for the Day 3 train and bus excursions detailed in our transport guide.

Day 1: Gamla Staden, Malmöhus Castle & the Canal Parks

  • Morning (Stortorget, Sankt Petri Kyrka & Lilla Torg): Begin at Stortorget, laid out in 1538, to admire Helgo Zettervall's 1860s Dutch Renaissance facade on the 1546 Malmö Town Hall, Jörgen Kock's 1524 brick house (Kockska huset), and Apoteket Lejonet. Step behind the Town Hall into 14th-century Brick Gothic Sankt Petri kyrka to see the medieval murals of Krämarkapellet and the 1611 wooden altarpiece, then cross to cobbled Lilla Torg and the 1590s half-timbered courtyard of Hedmanska gården (Form/Design Center).
  • Lunch (Scanian Classics): Order pan-fried Skånsk äggakaka with smoked pork belly and lingonberries near Lilla Torg or inside Malmö Saluhall on Gibraltargatan.
  • Afternoon (Gamla Väster, Kungsparken & Malmöhus Castle): Stroll west through the preserved 19th-century lanes of Gamla Väster into 1872 Kungsparken and Slottsparken, passing Henning Larsen's glass library wing and the 1851 Slottsmöllan windmill. Spend two hours inside Malmöhus Castle (built 1526 to 1539) and the Technology and Maritime Museum across the moat, boarding the WWII submarine U3 and viewing the 1945 Red Cross White Bus.

Finish your opening evening with a gentle stroll back along the canal footbridges or book a table around Gamla Väster and Lilla Torg, where the half-timbered facades and cobbled courtyards are softly lit after dusk. If you prefer a canal-side view, head up to the sky bar at Malmö Live on Universitetsholmen to look out over the Old Town roofs and the harbour basin as the evening lights come on across the strait.

Day 2: Västra Hamnen, Ribersborgs Kallbadhus, Contemporary Art & Möllevången

  • Morning (Västra Hamnen & Turning Torso): Walk past the 85-metre concert complex of Malmö Live into Västra Hamnen. Explore the narrow car-free alleys of the 2001 Bo01 housing exposition, Santiago Calatrava's 54-storey, 190-metre Turning Torso (2005), and the seaside boardwalks of Sundspromenaden and Daniaparken.
  • Midday (Ribersborgs Kallbadhus): Follow the coastal path one kilometre southwest along Ribersborgsstranden to the 1898 wooden pier of Ribersborgs kallbadhus for a wood-fired sauna, a dip in the Öresund overlooking the Öresund Bridge, and lunch at the pier café.
  • Afternoon & Evening (Moderna Museet, Malmö Konsthall & Möllevången): Visit Moderna Museet Malmö inside its 1901 power station and Klas Anshelm's 1975 Malmö Konsthall near Triangeln. Walk through 45-hectare Pildammsparken to Möllevångstorget and 1891 Folkets Park for evening falafel wraps and live music at Moriska Paviljongen.

If your visit coincides with an orchestral concert at Malmö Live Konserthus or an opera production at Malmö Opera near Triangeln, Day 2 evening is the ideal time to attend a performance before heading down to Möllevången. In summer, you can also linger along the timber steps of Sundspromenaden or the circular lawn of Tallriken in Pildammsparken to enjoy the long Scandinavian twilight.

Day 3: Day Trips to Lund Cathedral & the Falsterbo Peninsula

  • Morning (Medieval Lund): Ride an Öresundståg or Pågatågen train 20 kilometres northeast to Lund, founded around 990. Visit Romanesque Lund Cathedral (Lunds domkyrka, main altar consecrated in 1145) to see its 1398 altarpiece, 15th-century astronomical clock, and vaulted crypt with the carved pillar figure of Giant Finn, then walk through the cobbled lanes of the 1666 Lund University campus, Lundagård park, the Botanical Garden, the Historical Museum, and the open-air museum Kulturen.
  • Afternoon (Lernacken & Skanör med Falsterbo): Return through Malmö to the Lernacken viewpoint at the foot of the Öresund Bridge, or take a regional Skånetrafiken bus 28 to 30 kilometres south to the twin medieval herring-market towns of Skanör med Falsterbo (unified in 1754) at the southwestern tip of the Scandinavian Peninsula to walk past pastel wooden beach huts and the 1795 Falsterbo Lighthouse.

Both Lund and the Falsterbo Peninsula contrast sharply with Malmö's Brick Gothic merchant squares and waterfront towers: Lund surrounds its twelfth-century sandstone cathedral with quiet academic quadrangles and half-timbered student streets, while Skanör and Falsterbo open onto windswept white dunes where the Baltic Sea meets the Öresund strait.

Coordinating City Tunnel Trains and Skånetrafiken Buses

If you arrive via Copenhagen Airport on the morning of Day 1, store your bags at a hotel near Malmö Central Station or Stortorget (see our where to stay guide) so you can step straight onto the Old Town cobbles. Remember to pack two towels and a locker padlock in your daypack on Day 2 for Ribersborgs kallbadhus, and carry your passport or national ID card whenever your rail journeys cross the strait into Denmark. A 24-hour Skånetrafiken regional ticket on Day 3 covers both the morning train ride to Lund and the afternoon bus excursion down to the sandy beaches of Skanör and Falsterbo, while our seasonal weather guide helps you adjust outdoor beach time and indoor museum stops to the time of year. Should rain or strong coastal gusts roll in from the strait on Day 2, simply swap the outdoor beach walk with the indoor galleries of Malmöhus Castle or Moderna Museet so you catch the seafront boardwalks under clearer skies.

Because every stop across these three days connects via the 410-kilometre municipal cycle network, green Skånetrafiken city buses, and the City Tunnel railway stations at Malmö Central, Triangeln, and Hyllie, you can easily adapt the order of outdoor coastal walks at Ribersborg and Västra Hamnen and indoor museum visits at Malmöhus Castle, Moderna Museet Malmö, and Malmö Konsthall to match the breeze off the Öresund strait.
