MacRitchie Reservoir: TreeTop Walk Suspension Bridge and Forest Boardwalks

Trails, the suspension bridge and practical advice for a morning in the forest.

MacRitchie Reservoir lies in the middle of the island, at the edge of the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, and it feels a long way from the city even though it is a short ride from Orchard Road. The reservoir was built in the 1860s to supply drinking water, and the forest around it has been protected ever since. Today it is the favourite place for Singaporean walkers and runners, and it offers the best chance of a proper forest walk on the island.

Choosing a trail

Several routes start from the park by the water. A short boardwalk along the shore takes about half an hour and suits anyone who wants a taste of the forest without a long hike. A medium route runs along the lake edge and into the trees, and takes a couple of hours. The long route leads across the reservoir area to the TreeTop Walk, and a full loop takes four hours or more. Pick the route by your fitness and the weather, and do not underestimate the heat.

The TreeTop Walk

The highlight is a narrow suspension bridge about two hundred and fifty metres long, set high among the treetops between two hills. It gives a view down into the forest canopy, and you may spot birds and monkeys at eye level. Access is controlled for safety, and the bridge is usually walked in one direction only, so check the official site for current arrangements and closures before you plan a day around it. The bridge can close in bad weather.

Wildlife and how to behave

The forest is home to long-tailed macaques, monitor lizards, squirrels, snakes and a rich variety of birds. The macaques are the ones that cause trouble: they snatch food and bags, so keep snacks hidden and never feed them. Do not carry plastic bags in your hand, and stay calm if a monkey approaches. If you see a snake, stand back and let it pass. Stick to marked paths, and keep your voice low if you want to see animals.

What to wear and bring

  • Shoes with grip, since boardwalks and roots are slippery after rain.
  • Plenty of water, because the humid heat drains you faster than you expect.
  • Light clothing, a hat and insect repellent.
  • A light rain jacket, for sudden downpours.

When to go

Early morning is the best time, with cool air and active wildlife. Late afternoon is pleasant for shorter walks, but leave enough time to be out before dark. Midday is hot and exposed on the lakeside paths, and after heavy rain some trails are muddy. Weekends are busier with runners and families, and a weekday visit is calmer.

Other things to do

You can rent a kayak on the reservoir, jog the lakeside loop or sit in the park with a drink from the small cafe near the entrance. Birdwatchers will like the quieter trails, where hornbills and kingfishers appear. The park also has benches where you can sit and watch the light change on the water after a rainstorm.

Getting there

Take a bus or a taxi from the city, since the nearest MRT stations are a short ride away. Allow thirty to forty minutes from Orchard Road. Bring cash for refreshments, because there are few places to buy food once you leave the park. There are toilets near the entrance, but none along the long routes.

Compare it with other greens

If you prefer a gentler walk, the Botanic Gardens have paved paths and cafes. For a ridge walk with views, try the Southern Ridges. For a wild island day, Pulau Ubin offers a very different landscape of mangroves and old villages.

Skip the long loop if you are not used to hiking in the heat, or if rain is forecast. A short walk and a coffee give you the flavour. If you are short of time, Gardens by the Bay offers a tamer version of nature in the middle of the city.
