Sentosa Beaches Compared: Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong Coastal Guide

How the three Sentosa beaches differ and how to choose between them.

Sentosa is a resort island just south of the main island, linked by a causeway, a monorail, a boardwalk and a cable car. Its three main beaches, Siloso, Palawan and Tanjong, run along the south coast, and each has its own character. The sand is brought in and carefully maintained, the water is calm, and the atmosphere is far more relaxed than the busy centre of the city.

Siloso Beach

Siloso is the liveliest of the three and the closest to the main attractions. It has volleyball nets, beach bars, water sports and a party atmosphere in the evening. It suits groups of friends and active travellers who want to rent equipment or play games. The beach is wide, but it can be crowded on weekends. Music from the bars carries along the sand, so families with young children may find it loud.

Palawan Beach

Palawan is the family beach. It has a shallow lagoon, a children's play area, shaded seating and a wide lawn behind the sand. A short suspension bridge leads to a small islet that is promoted as the southernmost point of continental Asia, and children enjoy the crossing and the lookout tower. The mood is gentle and safe, and the cafes are practical rather than fashionable. If you travel with children, this is the beach to choose.

Tanjong Beach

Tanjong is the quietest and most grown-up of the three. It has a more natural feel, with trees along the sand, a long open stretch for walking and a beach club at one end. It is popular for sunset and for slow weekend afternoons. The crowds are thinner, and the setting is more relaxed. If you prefer calm over activity, this is the best choice.

How to get there

The easiest route is by MRT to the large shopping mall at the harbour, then take the monorail or walk along the boardwalk to the island. A cable car from Mount Faber or the harbour gives a scenic arrival, and buses and a beach shuttle link the beaches. Allow about an hour from the city centre. Check the official site for transport details and current fees.

When to go

Morning is calm and cooler, with the lightest crowds. Late afternoon is lovely for swimming and for sunset. Weekends fill up with families, and public holidays are busiest. Rain can come quickly, and storms may close the water for a time, so keep an eye on the lifeguards' flags. Swimming areas are marked, and ships sail close to the shore in the distance.

What to bring

  • Sunscreen, a hat and a towel, since there is limited shade on parts of the beach.
  • Water shoes if you plan to walk on the rocky stretches.
  • A dry bag for your phone and valuables.
  • Cash or a card for beach bars and rentals.

Pairing it with other sights

Sentosa has more than beaches. You can visit the old gun battery at Fort Siloso, spend a day at Universal Studios or see sea life at the Oceanarium. A cable car link from the Southern Ridges makes a scenic way to combine a hike with a beach.

Who it suits

The beaches suit families, couples and groups who want a day of sun and a simple meal. They are less suitable for travellers who want wild nature or long beach walks, for which East Coast Park offers a longer shoreline. If you only have a short time in Singapore, a morning at Palawan or an evening at Tanjong gives you the island flavour without a big commitment.

You do not need to visit all three beaches. Pick the one that matches your mood, and spend the rest of your time on the other attractions or in the water.
